Biography
George Martin was born on September 20, 1948 in Beyonne ( New Jersey , USA ), in the family of port loader Raymond Collins Martin and Margaret Brady Martin. Martin has two sisters, Darlene Martin-Lapinsky and Janet Martin-Patten.
He attended primary school Mary Jane Donahue and high school Merist High School in Beyonne. From childhood he was fond of reading, wrote and sold scary stories to neighboring children. In high school, he became a fan and collector of comics , and also began to write for amateur fanzines .
At Northwestern University in Evanston ( Illinois ) received his bachelor's degree (1970) and master's degree (1971) in journalism . At the same time, he wrote and published in his February 1971 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction magazine his first story, The Hero.
In 1972-1974, for basic reasons, he served an alternative civilian service under the AmeriCorps VISTA program with Cook County Legal Aid. In 1973-1976 he was engaged in conducting chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association. In 1976-1978 he taught journalism at Clark College (now Clark University) in Dubuque ( Iowa ).
In the eighties he moved to Hollywood , where he worked for a long time as a screenwriter (for example, in the series Beauty and the Beast ), editor (series Twilight Zone ), producer (series Doorways).
For a long time, Martin considered modern fantasy to be frivolous literature, although he spoke positively of The Lord of the Rings by John Tolkien . His prejudice collapsed thanks to the books of two writers: Ted Williams (namely, his series “ Memory, Sorrow and Turn ”) and Jack Vance [7] . After that, George decided to take on a new genre and achieved significant success in it. The series “ Song of Ice and Fire ” brought him worldwide fame.
Lives in Santa Fe ( New Mexico ).
In 2014, in an interview, the writer said that he writes his books using the editor WordStar 4.0 - an application released in 1987 [8] .

In 1974, Martin married Gale Burnick ( born Gale Burnick ), whom he divorced in 1979. During this period, he led a rather stormy life and enjoyed the attention of science fiction fans: according to his recollections, he met his future second wife Paris McBride in 1975, when she appeared at a party in the women's sauna with the participation of Martin and his friends [10] . George Martin lived with Paris McBride in an unregistered marriage for more than thirty years. On February 15, 2011, Martin became engaged to Paris at a home ceremony at their home in Santa Fe. In August of that year, they held another, larger in scale and number of invited ceremony at the Worldcon festival in Reno [11] . No kids.
While living in New Jersey in the 1970s, George Martin and his apartment neighbors kept cats. One of these cats, Dax ( Dax ), was bred in the Tafa Travel series as the protagonist’s cat [9] . George and Paris provide financial support for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico. [12] In 2013, Martin purchased the Santa Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe, which had been closed since 2006, and restored it at his own expense; the cinema reopened on August 9, 2013 [13] . He also supported the local art group Meow Wolf, donating $ 2.7 million in January 2015 for the architectural project The House of Eternal Return [14] [15] . Martin is a fan of American football and baseball : he is a fan of the New York Jets [16] and New York Mets [17] . Martin was baptized in the Catholic faith and considers himself a non-practicing Catholic, although he answered the question of religious views that he proposed to consider himself an atheist or agnostic [18] .
George Martin advocates feminism and gender equality. [19] “For me, being a feminist means treating men and women alike. I perceive men and women as people. Yes, with some differences. But many of the differences are created by the culture in which we all live, medieval or western, of this century, ”he says.

The Song of Ice and Fire series
J.R. R. Martin is the author of the fantasy cycle "Song of Ice and Fire." Of the planned seven saga novels, five were written and published for September 2011. All five books have been published in Russia: Game of Thrones , Battle of the Kings , Storm of Swords , Vulture Feast, and Dance with the Dragons . The fifth book of the cycle - “Dance with Dragons” ( Eng. A Dance With Dragons ) was published on July 12, 2011 in the United States and Great Britain, in Russia it was published in the summer of 2012, being divided into two volumes.
The action of the novels takes place in the pseudo-historical world closest to medieval Europe of the 15th century (“ The War of the Scarlet and White Rose ”). The main scene is the mainland Westeros.
In addition, Martin has authored three stories written for different anthologies, which also take place in the world of Song, but a century before the events of the main series. Their heroes are the wandering knight Duncan and his squire Eg. Two of them, “Land Knight” and “Sworn Knight” , were published in Russian. The third - The Mystery Knight ("The Mysterious Knight") - was released in March 2010.
In January 2007, HBO bought the rights to the film version of the song "Song of Ice and Fire." The first season of Game of Thrones was aired in the spring of 2011, gathering mostly positive reviews from critics; Then the series was extended for the second season. Some key roles in the series are played by movie stars: Sean Bean played the role of Eddard Stark in the first season, Peter Dinklage - Tirion Lannister [41] . The second season of the series was released in April 2012. Almost immediately, the series was extended for the third season, and in 2014 the fourth season of the series was released. The show of the fifth season started in the spring of 2015. In 2016, the sixth season of the series was released, and before its premiere, the series was extended for the seventh season, which was released in 2017. After the premiere of the sixth season, the series was extended to the final eighth season, which was released in the spring of 2019 [42] .
George Martin is an ardent admirer of Maurice Druon and his novels from the Cursed Kings series. In 2009, in a note for The Guardian, he expressed regret that during Druon’s lifetime he never found time to meet with him and shake his hand [43] .
