Biography
Father, Pavel Borisovich Shaskolsky , before the revolution and during the years of NEP, was the owner of a pharmacy in St. Petersburg, then worked as a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical industry, died in blockade. Mother - director of the school for working youth, head of the regional library.
I. Shaskolsky graduated from the 28th secondary school (former Petrishule ) in 1936. In 1936-1941 he studied at the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University , underwent training in two departments - historical and archaeological. During these years, the main scientific interests were formed: the history of ancient and medieval Russia, relations with Scandinavia. Already in 1940 the first printed works were published.
During the war, I.P. Shaskolsky (not drafted into the army due to poor vision) worked in the air defense forces of the university, in the construction of defensive structures. In March 1942 he was evacuated to Yaroslavl . He worked as the head of Arefinsky RONO, Yaroslavl region .
In the fall of 1944 he returned to Leningrad, entered graduate school. In 1947 he defended his thesis ("The Struggle of Novgorod with Sweden and Norway until the 60s of the XIII century").
In 1949-1953 he worked at the Institute of History, Language and Literature in Petrozavodsk , then at the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism in Leningrad.
From 1956 until the end of his life, I.P. Shaskolsky was an employee of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the St. Petersburg Institute of History ). In 1965 he defended his doctoral dissertation ("The Stolbovsky Peace of 1617 and Russia's Trade Relations with the Swedish State in the First Half of the 17th Century."). Among the topics developed by scientists during this period are Normanism and Anti-Normanism, historical geography and historical studies of the North-West of Russia. Since 1981, Shaskolsky led the section of the history of geographical knowledge of the All-Union Geographical Society .
From 1951 to 1986 as a part-time teacher at the Leningrad State University , in particular, he taught the history of the Scandinavian countries at the philological and historical faculties of Leningrad State University.
The author of about 300 scientific works on history, historical geography, source studies of the North-West of Russia, the Scandinavian countries, Finland, the Baltic states, Karelia.
