Tankendo

Tankendo ( 短 剣 道 ) is a discipline associated with jukendo . Both were created during the Meiji and Taisho periods as part of an attempt to modernize the Japanese army. Initially, the French bayonet system was taken as the basis, but the results were unsatisfactory and elements of Japanese spear techniques were introduced into the system (the most significant borrowings are from Ito-ryu and Hojoin-ryu ), including the tobi fumikomi used in the training process and now time.

Tankendo was formed under the influence of the experience of the Russian-Japanese and World War I , when the bayonet (juken) had to be used at times in a dismantled state. There was a need to develop techniques for the effective use of the bayonet in close combat. The military again turned to classical techniques for inspiration, in particular to Toda-ryu .

Both jukendo and tankendo include learning basic kisho , basic and applied techniques ( kihon and oyo waza ), training the attacking actions of dai-ni kyoshu , which is generally similar to kakari-keiko in kendo , free training of dai-san kyoshu (or ji keiko ), shiai and kata . There are different series of kata for both types of weapons:juken-juken (8), juken tanken (6), juken-tachi (6), tanken-tanken (8) and finally tanken-juken (similar to juken-tanken (6)).

The Japanese imperial army combined training with juken / tanken (called jukenjutsu / tankenjutsu) and gunto soho , i.e. Toyama-ryu battojutsu (individual) and tatigumi (pair training). These sets of individual and paired kata provided an effective base for close combat using sharp piercing objects and constituted an excellent system.
