Abel, as a naturalist of the expedition, accompanied Lord William Pitt Amherst during a trip to China in Beijing in 1816 . As a result of this trip, in 1818 , he wrote and published the story " Narrative of a Journey into the interior of China, and of a voyage to and from this country ", after which he became famous as a naturalist.
Abel is the first Western scientist to report the presence of an orangutan on the island of Sumatra .
In 1816, Abel first collected individual specimens and seeds of the plant, which now bears the name Abelia chinensis ( Abelia chinensis ). The British botanist Robert Brown in 1818 named him the genus of plants discovered by Abel in China: Abelia of the Linnaeaceae family .
