Trappist beer

Trappist beer is a type of Belgian ale , originally brewed in breweries located in the ancient Belgian monasteries of the Catholic Order of Trappists . Varieties can be light and very strong, the color is straw-white and dark. Brewers monks use special yeast that causes fermentation at high temperature. Beer matures in bottles. In some monasteries, sugar is added to the wort during cooking, which adds strength to the drink. Strong varieties of Trappist beer have a dense and full taste, and acquires its buttery-fruity aroma due to high-temperature fermentation and the use of different hop cultures.

Trappist beer is a type of beer brewed by or under the control of Trappist monks . Out of about 170 Trappist monasteries, only 11 produce beer: Achel (Belgium), Chimay (Belgium), Orval (Belgium), Rochefort (Belgium), Westmalle (Belgium), Westvleteren (Belgium), La Trappe (Netherlands), Zundert (Netherlands) , Engelszell (Austria), Spencer (USA), Tre Fontane (Italy). Only these eleven breweries are allowed to use a special logo that indicates compliance with the standards described by the International Trapist Organization .

The Trappe beer La Trappe is brewed by the monks of the Koningshoeven Abbey in the Netherlands . Several years ago, after the acquisition of the Abbey brewery by Bavaria , the La Trappe beer produced there was forbidden to be called Trappist, but after the trial the brewery was returned this right, as evidenced by the corresponding icon on the bottle.

The history of the Belgian Trappist Abbey dates back to 1831 , and already in 1839 the monks opened the production of the now famous beer brands.

Trappist and Abbey Beer

So-called trappist beer should be distinguished. abbey beer . In recent decades, the term “abbey beer” has been used as a generic name for beer produced in Trappist style, but brewed in secular industrial breweries not related to Trappist abbeys [1] [2] . Usually abbey beers are produced under a license issued by the relevant abbey or fund managing the assets of the now defunct abbey [3] .
