Aerosol - a dosage form that consists of solutions , emulsions , suspensions of medicinal substances that are under pressure together with propellants in a sealed package equipped with a valve-spray system (dosing or non-dosing).
Aerosols may be intended for inhalation ( inhalation ). A variety of inhaled dosage forms are inhalation powders (inhalers), which can be produced in special packaging and metering devices such as rotodisk, ventodisk, etc.
Aerosols can also be intended for applying a therapeutic composition to the skin, mucous membranes , wounds. [one]
Aerosols should be distinguished from sprays. In the case of an aerosol, the drug mixture is supplied from the can by opening the valve under the action of overpressure in the can. In sprays, the pressure in the can is atmospheric, and the drug mixture is supplied from the can as a result of mechanical extrusion of the micropump by the piston.
