History of development and construction
Project 770 modifications were projects 771 and 773. In total, from 1964 to 1986, 107 ships of this type and their modifications were built. Medium landing ships of these projects were part of not only the Soviet Navy, but also the naval forces of Poland , Vietnam , Egypt , Algeria , Libya , Yemen , Ethiopia , Cuba , Syria , Bulgaria and India . The last ship of this type was built in 2002 according to a modified project (type NS-722) for Yemen .
The ships of this project deserved a very high praise in the countries where they were exploited. The advantages of these amphibious ships include constructive simplicity, low cost and economy in operation, rational principles of deploying the landing force, a small crew , and the presence of multiple launch rocket systems in the armament.
Armament
The salvo-fire system used on these ships, consisting of two WM-18 launchers (an analogue of the Soviet BM-14 ) of Polish production with unguided missiles such as M-14-OF, had the following characteristics:
- Caliber: 140 mm
- Number of guides: 18
- Firing range :
- minimum: 1000 m
- maximum: 9800 m
- Type of warhead NURS : high-explosive
- Weight:
- BC: 18.8 kg
- BB : 4.2 kg
- Rocket flight speed : 400 m / s
Protection against surface and air enemy was provided by a 30-mm automatic artillery installation AK-230 , in addition to which the ship had Strela MANPADS .
Landing opportunities
Amphibious ships are capable of transporting 5 units of armored vehicles weighing up to 35 tons ( T-54A , T-34-85 , PT-76 , ZSU-57-2 , BTR-60P tanks ) or 4 IS-2 heavy tanks , or 3 towed artillery systems caliber 122–152 mm and 3 ATS-1 tractor units , or 9 ZIS-151 trucks, or 19 GAZ-69 cars.
