Aleksei Stepanovich Molchalin is one of the main characters in the poetic comedy by A. S. Griboedov “ Woe from Wit ”, the secretary of Famusov , a college assessor living at his place. Molchalin takes a significant part in the development of the plot of the work, he is one of the first to be included in the list of characters, although he does not appear so often in the work as compared to other characters.
Molchalin is a careerist, knows how to serve, an opportunist. He has two talents - “moderation” and “accuracy”. He has no moral ideas about the happiness and duty of a citizen.
The name of Molchalin became a household word, denoting flatterers, toadies, obedient executors of all orders of the leadership, hiding their own opinions, also the name of the hero expresses its main feature - “wordlessness”. Back in the middle of the 19th century, Belinsky wrote: “Don’t say: here is a man who is impersonating out of benefits, impersonating unselfishly, according to one attraction of the soul - say: here is Molchalin!” [1] .

Character Image
The image of Molchalin aroused interest in N.V. Gogol (“this face is accurately captured, silent, low <…> quietly making its way into people”), and M.E.Saltykov -Shchedrin made him the hero of the series of essays “In the midst of moderation and accuracy” ("The Lord of Silence"). I. A. Goncharov noted that by his time ( 1871 ) the traits of silent behavior became archaism ("low worship to the degree of servility of silence is already hidden and now in the dark") [2] .
Comparisons of various public figures with Molchalin are used in journalism even today [3] [4] [5] .
