History

India has a developed space program and, in terms of potential, is currently the sixth space power (after Russia , the USA , China , Europe and Japan ).

Gaganyan manned spacecraft under the project

With the launch of its own satellite using its own launch vehicle, India in 1979 became chronologically the seventh space power . In 1980, ISRO has two launch vehicles: PSLV and GSLV . Previously, two less powerful launch vehicles were used: SLV and ASLV .

India is one of the very few space powers that independently launches communications satellites into geostationary orbit (the first GSAT-2 - 2003), returning spacecraft ( SRE - 2007) and automatic interplanetary stations (AMS) to the Moon and Mars ( Chandrayan -1 - 2008, Mangalyan - 2014) and provides international launch services .

The first Indian astronaut flew on a Soviet space ship in 1984. India has its own manned space program and it is expected that starting from 2021 it will launch manned space flights of the Gaganaut astronauts on the Gaganyan spacecraft on its own and will become the fourth space superpower [2] .

In the future, ISRO is supposed to create a reusable spacecraft ( RLV-TD project, suborbital tests are underway) and a new generation reusable space transport system ( Avatar project ), and in the distant future (after 2025–2030) - manned flights to the moon in cooperation with other countries or even independently.

Budget

In 2012, the budget of the Department of Space Research of India was increased by more than 50% [3] .
