Lotte Lenya ( born Lotte Lenya ; real name is Carolina Wilhelmina Charlotte Blamauer, German Karoline Wilhelmine Charlotte Blamauer ; October 18, 1898 , Vienna , November 27, 1982 , New York ) - Austro-American actress and the singer, best known for playing the role of Russian villain Rosa Klebb in the James Bond film “ From Russia with Love ” (1963).

Biography

Carolina Wilhelmina Charlotte Blamauer was born in the Austrian capital, Vienna , into a Catholic family. In 1914, she left Austria and moved to Zurich , where she took acting lessons. There she made her debut on stage, taking with herself the name Lotte Lenya. In 1921, the actress settled in Berlin , performed in small roles in Berlin theaters, and her first success came in 1928 after playing the role of Jenny in the first production of the Three Penny Opera by B. Brecht. In 1931, she made her film debut, playing the same role in the film adaptation of the play . Lotte Leña also recorded several songs at Weils Studios.

In 1926, Lotte Lenya married composer Kurt Weill . After the Nazis came to power in Germany, the couple were forced to emigrate. So that there were no problems with emigration, they had to divorce . and in March 1933 they left Germany and settled in Paris . In 1935, Lotte Lenya and her husband moved to the United States , where they married again in 1937, and in 1941 they bought their own house in a small village 50 km from New York . Lotte Lenya was with her husband until his death in 1950, and after that she got married three more times: twice became a widow, and a third time divorced .

During World War II, the actress continued to perform on stage, participated in various radio shows, and also continued to record new songs. Soon, her Broadway debut took place. In 1956, Lotte Lenya won the Tony Award for playing the role of Jenny in the English production of The Three-Penny Opera.

The actress brought great popularity in the 1960s several roles in British films. In 1961, she played the Duchess Magda in the film "Roman Spring Mrs. Stone", where the leading actors were Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty , for whose role she was nominated for the best supporting actress for the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award . In 1963, Lenya played the villain Rosa Klebb in the second James Bond film “ From Russia with Love, ” the role of which brought her even more popularity. In 1966, she played the role of Froline Schneider in the original Broadway musical Cabaret, for whose role she was nominated for Tony .

Lotte Lenya died of cancer on November 27, 1982 in New York at the age of 84, and was buried next to her first husband, Kurt Weil .

In 2007, the musical “Love Music” was staged on Broadway , based on the story of Lenya and Weil.
