He studied medicine and oriental languages in Vienna . In 1840, he worked in Leiden with ancient Arabic manuscripts, after which he defended his thesis on the history of Arabic medicine in the same place. In 1843 - 1854 years is in the service of the British East India Company in India .
In 1856 - 1881 he taught Oriental languages at the University of Bern , in 1881 he moved to Heidelberg . The main work of Shprenger was the biography of Muhammad , in which the author, from the standpoint of contemporary positivistic philosophy of history, attached the leading importance in the processes of creation and evolution of Islam, not to the personality of Muhammad, but to "the spirit and circumstances of the time". He paid much attention to the influence of Muslim culture on the culture of the European Middle Ages. The works of Sprenger, as well as the works of Eastern authors published by him together with Indian scientists, were distinguished by an abundance of new material [5] .
