In 2001, the 53rd season of MotoGP road racing was held.

Season Summary

2001 was the end of the era of the class "500cc", since 2002, the prime class began to be called "MotoGP". However, 2001 itself was the beginning of a new era - the era of victories in the championships for Valentino Rossi . His first year of training has already passed, he won 11 races, leaving far behind his closest rival Max Biagi . Rossi and Biaggi began the season with an ugly incident at the Japan Moto Grand Prix , where Biagi tried to push Rossi off the track at a speed of 150 km / h, and Rossi responded 2 laps later with aggressive overtaking and a middle finger demonstration. Rossi won that championship and secured a victory for 2 races before its end. The best newcomer of the year was Shinya Nakano .
