Mercury Biography

The mother of Mercury and the Scarlet Witch - Magda - took refuge on Mount Vundagore in , the home of the , after seeing her husband Magneto using her magnetic powers for the first time. There she gave birth to twins, but died shortly afterwards. Since Wundagor was not a place for human babies, the Evolutionist placed them under the care of the gypsy Django Maximoff, who raised the twins as their own children. [2]

When Pietro and Wanda grew up, they discovered that they had superhuman abilities. Pietro realized that he had superhuman speed. Later, the couple showed their strength in public, and they were attacked by a superstitious crowd. They were saved by their father - now the supervillain Magneto - although neither he nor his children knew about their connection. Magneto then recruited Mercury and the Scarlet Witch in the first incarnation of his Brotherhood of Mutants . The Brotherhood fought the X-Men several times, although the twins remained only because of their obligations to Magneto. When Magneto and his assistant Toad were abducted by the cosmic creature Wanderer , the Brotherhood broke up and the twins stated that their debt to Magneto had been paid. [3]

Shortly afterwards, Mercury and the Scarlet Witch were recruited by the hero Iron Man into the Avengers team. Together with leader Captain America and former villain Falcon Eye , the four became the second generation of the Avengers and later earned the nickname Cap's Crazy Quartet. [4] Wanda became a close friend of Hawkeye and a faithful member of the team until she was accidentally wounded on a mission against Magneto. After that, Mercury escaped from the Avengers with a wounded sister. [5] The couple escorted Magneto back to his Mid-Atlantic base, [6] where he held captive the X-Men, [7] . At the base, Pietro was forced to fight Cyclops . [8] After the short appearance of Mercury in the Spider-Man issue [9], the twins finally realized that Magneto was a true villain. Pietro and Wanda, along with several other mutants, were then abducted by the Sentinels , but then released by the X-Men. [ten]

Mercury later returned to the Avengers, with the news that Wanda was abducted by Commander Arkon . [11] After her rescue, Wanda — along with Pieter — returned to the team. On one of the missions, Mercury was wounded by the Sentinels [12] and a Crystal was found, one of the Inhumans [13] . The crystal was cured by Pietro, and, ultimately, they got married. [14]

In the title of Giant-Size Avengers, the twins met Robert Frank, the former World War II hero Wolf, who was on Wandagor with his wife at the time of their birth. Robert Frank briefly joined the Avengers, believing that Pietro and Wanda were his children. [15] Later, Mercury and the Scarlet Witch were abducted by Django Maximoff and taken to Wandagor. After their release, they learned from Bova, the host of their midwives, that their father was Django Maximoff. [sixteen]

Days get dark

Mercury and Crystal had a daughter, . [17] It was at this time that Magneto discovered his kinship with Mercury and the Scarlet Witch and preferred to tell them the truth. Mercury was disgusted and told Magneto that he had the opportunity to be a father years ago. [18] The marriage of Mercury and Crystal cracked when Crystal had an affair. [19] , and later another through the efforts of Maximus the Mad , brother of the Black Thunder king of Inhumans, who, using technology, brought Mercury to madness and evil temper, [20] but he was later cured. [21]

Mercury briefly helped the West Coast Avengers against Magneto and the villain to save Wanda. [22] Despite his success, he was still angry with Crystal and joined the US government-sponsored superhero team X-Factor . [23] During this period of estrangement, Crystal almost made an affair with the Avenger the Black Knight . [24]

Ultimately, Mercury and Crystal reunited when the Avengers, X-Factor, and X-Men teamed up to stop a group of mutant terrorists who kidnapped their daughter Luna and were guilty of fomenting civil war on the island nation of . Having dealt with the threat, Mercury learned about Crystal's relationship with the Black Knight and left, leaving X-Factor at the same time. [25]

Mercury later took the Moon and joined the High Evolutionist, helping him and his Knights of Wandagor repel the attacks of the villains of and the . In the course of this war, Mercury used the experimental isotope E to increase its strength and move at high supersonic speeds. Soon after, a future version of Pietro, who called himself "Nestor", appeared to him and discovered that his strength was not speed, but rather based on time. [26]

M Day

The Scarlet Witch suffered a nervous breakdown due to the loss of her children and began to change reality in order to recreate them, which resulted in random attacks on the Avengers. The Avengers and Doctor Strange led her into a coma and then gave Magneto away. But he, however, could not help Wanda, and several members of the Avengers and X-Men offered to kill her. Panicked, Mercury convinced the Scarlet Witch to correct her mistakes, using her powers to turn the world into a beautiful one. Then Wanda changed reality on Day M - a world where there are a majority of mutants, and a minority of ordinary people, with Magneto as the absolute ruler. Several heroes eventually returned their memories and attacked Magneto, who regained his own memory and realized that Mercury was to blame for all this. Then he killed Mercury, crushing it by the Guard, but the Scarlet Witch raised her brother and told her father that he preferred the mutants to his own children. Then Wanda said: “No more mutants” and returned the world back to its original form, so that 98% of the mutant population lost their strength - including Mercury. [27]

Son M

Mercury became depressed and soon came across an angry Spider-Man who remembered a changed world where he was married to the late beloved Gwen Stacy and had a child. Mercury decided to jump off the building and was seriously injured. Arriving Crystal teleported him to the Inhuman lunar base for the medical care of the Beast, that he wanted to commit suicide due to loss of strength. After treatment with the healer Inhumans, Mercury asked Black Thunder for permission to undergo Terrigenesis and become non-human, being unable to live like an ordinary person. Mercury’s request, however, was denied because it has human blood, and Terrigenesis is intended only for those of a purely inhuman kind, in order to reduce the risk of harmful mutations. Mercury neglected the rule and broke into the sacred Terrigen Caves to pass through the Terrigen Mist . It seemed that there was no effect until Pietro came across an older version of himself, explaining the nature of his new “time jump” forces and discovering a plan to take Terrigen Crystals to Earth and restore the mutant population. Mercury managed to get a container of Terrigen Crystals and went to Genosha with the Moon and the dog Inhuman Grip . Then Mercury misted the surviving mutants, which restored their abilities, but at a dangerous level.

The consequences were catastrophic - several mutants died, because their forces mutated beyond control; The moon was exposed to the Terrigene Mist; Magneto was beaten half to death in front of the moon with enraged Mercury, and the container eventually ended up in the US Army. The reaction of the Black Thunder was the utterance of the word “war”, and the ultrasonic cry issued announced the beginning of the war between the Inhumans and the US government. Mercury escaped and exposed itself to even greater levels of the Terrigen Mist, which gave an unexpected result, allowing Pietro to grow Terrigen Crystals from his own body and restore the ability of mutants at will. Now, Mercury had two goals: to “cure” the mutants and to prevent the great calamity that he caught a glimpse of when traveling to the future. [28] During the Civil War, Pietro opened a shop in Mutant Town. [29]

After the Inhumans attacked America, the Black Thunder came to Mercury and demanded the return of the crystals. In response, Mercury exposed its chest, from which fragments of crystals protruded. Seeing this, Crystal told Pietro that, according to the laws of Inhumans, their marriage was dissolved. [thirty]

Mercury, with the help of the used crystals in his body to restore the strength of mutants who had lost them by touching them. The result was disastrous for Elijah Cross and other members of the group, and as a result, the Rictor destroyed the crystals implanted in the body of Mercury. [31] Pietro then saved Laila Miller, who set him up, from drowning in order to kill her personally. Layla managed to escape, taking advantage of the growing frenzy of Mercury and its slight hesitation before ending it. [32]

After Secret Wars

Mercury is shown as a member of one of the avenger teams led by Steve Rogers , and the team also includes: The Torch Man , Shelma , Dr. Voodoo and Deadpool .

Strengths and Abilities

Current Forces

  • Physiology Adapted: Pietro's body is adapted for movement at high speeds. Its cardiovascular and respiratory systems are many times more effective than in a normal person. It absorbs approximately 95% of the food, which gives it more energy (normal human use is approximately 25%). The chemical processes of the muscles of Mercury are so improved that his body does not produce the poisons of fatigue, normal by-products of movement, which force the body to rest. Most likely his body constantly ejects unnecessary substances during his accelerated breathing through exhalation. Pietro's joints are smoother and more lubricated than the joints of a normal person. His tendons are stronger than red-hot steel wire. Mercury's bones contain unknown materials, many times more durable than calcium, to withstand the dynamic impacts of his legs. The reaction rate of Mercury is many times higher than that of an ordinary person, that is, his reaction occurs faster, with the help of which Pietro normally perceives the world around him at high speeds. Lacrimosis (mucous membrane of the eye) Mercury is more viscous than normal, thus preventing the rapid evaporation and replenishment of surface fluids on its eyeballs under the influence of strong air currents.
  • Superhuman speed: Mercury has been able to travel faster since childhood than the speed of sound (1193 km / h). He had sufficient energy reserves to run at this average speed for several hours, after which he would have to stop to replenish energy reserves. Mercury used its super-fast abilities for various purposes. He can easily catch or evade a thousand bullets by vibrating with his hands, Pietro was able to break the bonds of molecules, thereby leading to the decay of atoms, for example, Maximoff could bring down the whole building. He can also, simply moving directly, create cyclone-like streams of air that can knock a person down or turn the car over, as well as rotate his hands creating funnels that could hold or stop heavy objects. He is able to cross the Atlantic Ocean and get to another continent in less than an hour, can also easily run along the walls of buildings in any direction. Pietro is able to reach speeds of 8,200 times the speed of sound, but it can run much faster, its speed limit has not yet been disclosed, it is possible that Mercury can move thousands of times faster. Mercury is also immune to the effects of friction and a rarefied atmosphere. He could easily run up Mount Everest in less than a split second.
  • Molecular destabilization: Mercury can destabilize (destroy) the molecular system of objects, which can lead to destruction or even explosion of an object. This ability is rarely shown. Pietro cannot use this ability from a distance, like his nephew Thomas Shepard.
  • Superhuman strength: Pietro has superhuman strength, especially in his lower body. With his hands he can lift 500 kg, while with his feet he can lift about 2 tons under optimal conditions.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Pietro is many times stronger than ordinary people, as described above. Pietro is also able to withstand such damage from which an ordinary person would die.
  • Immunity to telepathy: Due to the fact that Mercury has a high speed of perception, it does not affect telepathy.
