Biography
Adalbert was the younger brother of Frederick I , Earl of Saarbrücken . Appointed Chancellor and Advisor to Emperor Henry V , he participated in a Roman campaign against Pope Paschal II and insisted on his renunciation of investorship , for which he was made Archbishop of Mainz and Primate of Germany and Italy , but was imprisoned in 1112–1115 for his transfer to the pope’s side. years.
Upon his release, he again entered the battle with Henry V, enlisting the help of the citizens of Mainz , promising them the famous privilege hidden in the copper doors of the temple in 1118 and renewed in 1135.
The Worms concordat stopped the struggle by issuing a decree on the election and nomination of bishops; but Adalbert hoped that Lothar of Saxony , whom he supported in the royal elections of 1126, would give up the rights granted by the concordat to the state. Although Lothar, out of a desire to be elected, pointed out the possibility of such a concession, he himself was very pious, a friend of Bernard of Clairvaux and Norbert Xantensky , and was ready to personally support the interests of the pope. Therefore, Lothar was not afraid of Adalbert’s hostile attitude and his desire to foment a civil war. As a result, Adalbert achieved nothing, even lost his former influence, although he retained his dignity.
He died on June 23, 1137.
