The women's 5000m race at the 2010 Winter Olympics was held on February 24th .

The races took place in the Richmond Olympic Oval from 13:00 to 14:45 local time ( UTC-8 ).

The 2006 silver medalist of Turin, Claudia Pechstein, was serving a disqualification, while champion Clara Hughes and bronze medalist Cindy Klassen took part in the competition. Klassen became the 12th, and Hughes won the bronze medal.

The current world record holder at this distance Martina Sablikova previously won a gold medal at a distance of 3000 m and showed the best results this season. Clara Hughes was the first to run the distance faster than seven minutes in the fifth pair (out of eight), and in the seventh pair, Stefanie Beckert , a silver medalist of Vancouver at a distance of 3000 m, improved her result, thereby guaranteeing a medal. In the eighth pair, Sablikova and Daniela Anshyuts-Toms fled. At first, both of them were ahead of Beckert's schedule, but Anshyuts-Toms started to fall behind quite quickly, and in the end, although she ran out of seven minutes, she lost not only Beckert, but also Hughes, and Sablikova, although she lost most of the reserve on the last lap, became Olympic champion. For Sablikova, this is the third Vancouver medal after gold at 3,000 m and bronze at 1,500 m, for Beckert - the second after silver at 3,000 m. For the 37-year-old Hughes, who last entered her speed skating career, this is the fourth Olympic medal at the Winter Games . In addition, she won two bronze medals in cycling at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
