Local Governmental Areas of Nigeria

Local Government Areas (RMU; Yoruba Agbègbè Ìjọba Ìbílẹ̀ , Local Government Areas, LGA ) is a second-level administrative unit in Nigeria that divides the states. All in Nigeria 775 RMU.

Each district is governed by a local government council , whose members are elected by voting.

The functions of the local government council are specified in the Nigerian Constitution :

  • Provide state-level economic development advice
  • collect duties and taxes;
  • create and maintain cemeteries, homes for the elderly and street children ;
  • issue licenses for bicycles and other vehicles without a mechanical engine (carts, carts, boats);
  • create and maintain marketplaces, car parks and public restrooms;
  • build and monitor the condition of roads, sidewalks, sewers, parks;
  • give names to streets, determine house numbers;
  • provide territory with public transport;
  • register births, weddings and the dead;
  • tax leased private homes or apartment buildings at the rate set by the state legislature;
  • monitor the status of outdoor advertising, pets, laundries, shops, kiosks, restaurants and other catering establishments .

Each local government district is divided into communities ( English ward , lit. polling station ; an average of 10 to 15 in one RMS).
