Northgas was established in 1993 to develop part of the North Urengoyskoye field with reserves of 332.7 billion m³ of gas, 52.4 million tons of condensate. Commercial exploitation of the field began in 2001 . Initially, 51% of Northgas belonged to Urengoygazprom , but in the early 2000s its share fell to 0.5% in favor of structures friendly to the entrepreneur Farhad Akhmedov , who led Northgas. In June 2005, Gazprom and Farhad Akhmedov went to the world. Urengoygazprom received a 51% stake in Northgas free of charge, while Cypriot REDI Holding (its beneficiary Farhad Akhmedov) retained 49%, and they have the same right to manage the company. In early November 2012, it was announced that Farhad Akhmedov had agreed to sell his stake in Northgas to another Russian independent gas producer, Novatek . It was assumed that the deal, the amount of which would be $ 1.375 billion, should be closed before the end of 2012 ^[6] .

According to DeGolyer and MacNaughton, the volume of geological reserves of the field being developed by Northgas as of June 30, 2004 amounted to: gas - 353.08 billion m³, condensate - 62.16 million tons, oil - 12.56 million tons.
