Fluorimetry (fluorescence analysis) is a method for determining the concentration of a substance from the fluorescence intensity that occurs when a substance is irradiated with monochromatic radiation.
Various lasers (continuous / pulsed, solid-state / gas-discharge / based on dye solutions) and mercury lamps are used as sources of monochromatic radiation. To select the necessary radiation spectrum, interference filters and monochromators are used. In the event that the test substance is difficult to go into an excited state, then several lasers or additional excitation in a gas discharge plasma are used.
The use of fluorimetry is complicated by the complexity of the implementation of this technique and the high cost of the necessary laboratory equipment.
Laser atomic-fluorescence analysis determines the neon in helium (1 · 10 -9 %), the laser molecular-fluorescence method analyzes nitric oxide , nitrogen dioxide , sulfur dioxide (1 · 10 -7 %).
