DotA is a team tactical and strategic game with elements of a computer role-playing game in which each player controls one hero and, if the hero has the corresponding abilities, a certain number of additional creatures. During the game process , over time and depending on the success of his actions, the player gains experience by discovering the new abilities of his hero, and the money he spends on the purchase of various items. The main objective of the game for each of the two teams is to destroy the enemy camp, protected by towers. Players control only their hero (and possibly several summoned or captured creatures); heroes are helped by computer-controlled units called “creeps” [3] .

The map was created using the World Editor level editor for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos , and with the release of the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne extension, it was improved. There are many variations of DotA , but the most popular of them is DotA Allstars [4] , developed by IceFrog since 2005 .

DotA Allstars gained notable popularity and presented itself as one of the disciplines in the championships in computer games: BlizzCon (conducted by Blizzard Entertainment ), Asian World Cyber Games , Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution , Russian ASUS Open , Electronic Sports World Cup . In 2008, an article appeared on the Gamasutra website dedicated to computer games, the author of which claimed that DotA became the most popular and most discussed free modification to the game [4] . There is a remake of the game, created by Valve in conjunction with IceFrog , called Dota 2 .

Development History

DotA Idea and Emergence

Warcraft III is a real-time strategy , the third part in the Warcraft series, developed by Blizzard Entertainment . Together with this part, as with Warcraft II , Blizzard released a special free level editor - World Editor . With this editor, players can independently create scripts or "maps" ( English maps ) for Warcraft III. Subsequently, these cards can be used to play with other participants, in particular, via Battle.net or through other clients, for example, Garena . Such scenarios can be either a normal change of existing cards, or completely new cards with their own gameplay [5] .

The first map, similar to DotA , is considered to be Aeon of Strife for the StarCraft strategy [6] . Heroes of Warcraft III , over time developing and gaining levels, were a natural continuation of Aeon of Strife ; similar cards began to appear for this game.

The Defense of the Ancients map was created by a developer with the pseudonym Eul in 2003 [7] . He took as a basis the previously mentioned Aeon of Strife map [6] . However, after the release of the add-on Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne Eul did not release a new version, but opened the source code for the script [8] [9] . Numerous variations of this map were created [7] , however it was Allstars developed by Steve Fick (known as Guinsoo) that became the de facto standard . Fick said that he could not imagine how popular this game would become. Its popularity is due, first of all, to a wide variety of heroes and their abilities, as well as a wide selection of artifacts and rules by which the game will be played [10] . Fick added a recipe system for some artifacts so that heroes can collect more powerful items as their abilities grow. In addition, he introduced a powerful boss - Roshan ( born Roshan ), named for his bowling ball [7] .

Fick used one of the Battle.net channels ( chats ) to communicate and exchange ideas with other DotA players, but there was no official site or forum [7] . The leaders of one of the TDA clans decided to create an official DotA website for storing information and constantly updating it. One of the members of the Steve "Pendragon" clan, Mescon, created the site www.dota-allstars.com on October 14, 2004, which for quite a long time was the official community of DotA players [11] .

Further Development

Before transferring work on the map to another developer known as IceFrog , Fick was primarily concerned with optimizing the map. Since version 6.01, IceFrog also began to add new characters, new items and aspects of the game. Each released version was accompanied by a list of changes [12] . IceFrog is known for its stealth - it does not give interviews and for a long time the only thing that indicated its authorship was the mailing address on the official website and its name on the download screen [4] . A few years later, IceFrog announced that due to a conflict of interest with Pendragon, it boycotts the website www.dota-allstars.com and creates its own official DotA page at www.playdota.com [13] . Now IceFrog communicates with fans through its blog on this site, where it answers questions about the game and about him [14] . In addition, he constantly reports on new versions of the map, which he plans to release and on innovations that await players [15] .

The development of Defense of the Ancients takes place with the help of fans of the game who express their ideas regarding the gameplay , heroes and items on the official PlayDota forum. Better ideas are added in subsequent releases of the map. The standing offers expressed at the forum are being seriously considered - for example, IceFrog changed one of the new heroes less than two weeks after the release of the new version at the request of fans [4] . The names of heroes and artifacts in DotA are taken from a variety of sources: the Warcraft universe itself, mythology, anime , computer games. In some names, the names of people who somehow participated in the creation of the game are hidden. Among them: Eul and Guinsoo (map developers), Syl-la-ble ( tester ), Nessaja, MercurialXen and Kunkka ( artists ). The backstories of the heroes are, for the most part, based on the Warcraft universe. Fans can also offer their names and stories to heroes.

Since version 6.53, localized maps appeared - Russian , Chinese and Korean . Since version 6.60, localizations appeared in new languages - French , Czech and Portuguese . Starting with version 6.61, the map is also available in Hungarian . Translations are also being prepared in Polish, Spanish, Greek, Swedish, Indonesian, Dutch, Romanian, Albanian, Turkish, and Serbian. Maps in different languages are fully compatible with each other [12] .

From version 6.68, the word Allstars has been removed from the map name. Now the card is simply called DotA .

In October 2009, Valve Corporation hired IceFrog to participate in a new project related to DotA , which he described as “great news for fans of the game” [16] .

Third party programs

Third-party developers have created many different programs for DotA , which allow both to improve the quality of the game as a whole and to support the game. For example, Knarf created the “WC3 Banlist” program, which maintains a “black list”, which includes cheaters and other unscrupulous players, as well as opportunities to check ping , player’s country, and perform other functions. Some famous clans create their own rules for playing DotA and maintain their “black lists” [4] . In early 2010, IceFrog announced that the Varlock programmer had begun work on the “Ghost Proxy ++” program, which would allow players to reconnect to the games from which they “crashed” due to a poor Internet connection. This program should be useful for many DotA players, since “crashing” ( eng. Drop ) from games is a very common problem [17] . On March 12, 2010, a beta version of this program was released [18] .

AI versions

In parallel, AI versions of the map are also being developed. DotA is designed to play with live people, but AI scripts allow the computer to control the characters. Such cards are widely used by beginners for training; Downloading AI versions is possible from the official DotA website, although IceFrog does not participate in the creation of these cards and is not responsible for them [19] .

Dota 2

In autumn 2009, Valve hired the main DotA developer, IceFrog [20] , in the summer of 2010 filed an application for registration of this trademark [21] , and on October 13 announced Dota 2 [22] [23] . The official release took place on July 9, 2013 [24] [25] .

Gameplay

Map and Heroes

DotA is played by two teams, each of which can contain up to five people (there are unofficial 6x6 cards, but they are not very popular). The remaining two slots (places) are reserved for observers and arbitrators .

In the lower left corner of the map is the camp of "light" ( "Sentinels" , Eng. "The Sentinel" ), in the upper right - camp of "darkness" ( "Scourge" , Eng. "The Scourge" ). Both bases are protected by towers that stand on each of the three main roads to the base. In the center of each base is the main building - the World Tree ( Eng. World Tree ) at the Sentinels and the Ice Throne ( Eng. Frozen Throne ) at the Scourge. The team that first destroyed the main building wins the match. [8] [26] .

Gameplay DotA.

In DotA there is neither army control nor base building, as in most real-time strategies , under the control of a player there is only one hero and, possibly, a small number of called or subordinate creatures. Heroes have a unique set of abilities (one of them, opening after level 6, is called the ultimate - English. Ultimate ) and a certain tactical advantage over some other heroes. At the beginning of the game, each participant selects a hero for himself (or receives it randomly, depending on the chosen game mode) from twelve taverns - six for “light” and “darkness”. Heroes can be divided into classes: dodgers ( English Agility ), magicians ( English Intelligence ), strongmen ( English Strength ). To date, the number of heroes is 112 [27] . If the game mode, also called the mod ( English Game Mode ) is standard, then each player can choose heroes only from the taverns of his own side [6] .

The gameplay is based on close interaction between the allies, that is, one player in most cases will not be able to independently lead his team to victory. In DotA , team play and the correct selection of heroes and artifacts are very important [28] .

DotA Community Card. Yellow and purple indicate the location of the Sentinel and Scourge towers, respectively. The red star marks the Sentinel base, the green one Scourge. In addition, the names of the paths are indicated: upper, central and lower.

From each base every 30 seconds along three paths (upper, central and lower) there are computer-controlled creatures - “creeps” ( English creeps ), which collide with each other near the middle of the path. For killing enemy creeps, the player gains experience, and the one who struck the last blow also receives a small amount of money. The entire initial stage of the game is built around the killing of enemy creeps and attempts to prevent the enemy from doing the same: you can deliver the last blow to the allied creep, thus preventing him from finishing off the enemy [29] [30] . Creeps become stronger if part of the enemy base is destroyed.

Another type of creature involved in the game is neutral creeps. These creatures periodically appear in the forest on each side of the map in strictly defined places (camps). Neutral creeps are computer controlled and do not belong to either side. In the afternoon, they attack everyone who is next to them, and fall asleep at night. Neutral creeps are both very weak and strong enough, and for their killing the hero receives different amounts of gold and experience [31] . The most powerful neutral creep is Roshan, acting as a kind of boss in the game; his health, damage, and defense increase over time [32] .

Purpose and rules of the game

The rules are simple, but due to the variety of heroes and artifacts, the number of possible strategies is very large. In addition, the game has special game modes ( Eng. Game Modes ), teams that determine additional rules of the game. Modifications are registered at the very beginning by the first non-computer player of the Sentinel team (usually the creator of the game, playing for the blue color) and can affect such moments as the hero selection mode, the complexity of the game (affects the amount of experience and money gained), etc. Some modifications are not compatible each other and cannot be selected at the same time [33] .

In normal mode, the player controls the hero selected at the beginning of the game from beginning to end. The deceased hero will be revived after a certain period of time, the duration of which depends on the level of the hero. The exception is the mode of the game Deathmatch ( Rus. Deadly duel ): in this mode, the player who has lost the hero must choose (or randomly receive) a new one. All experience points and items go to the new character, but if the team gains a certain number of deaths (that is, when the heroes in the allied taverns run out), then the defeat is automatically counted ahead of schedule [33] .

The goal of the game is to destroy the enemy’s towers on at least one path (3 towers each), break through to its base and destroy the main building (the World Tree in the light, the Ice Throne in the dark), having previously destroyed the two towers guarding it [26] . If all the towers on the path and the barracks located in the camp are destroyed, the creeps of the attacking side on this path become stronger, and the reward for killing them becomes about half. After the destruction of all the barracks on three paths, creeps turn into megacreeps ( English Mega Creeps ), which are much more difficult to destroy.

General mechanics

DotA lacks army and base control, so each player focuses only on the development of his character. Heroes gain experience by raising their level ("pumped") by destroying enemy creeps, heroes and buildings, as well as neutral creatures that live in the forest. As you gain levels, the hero does more damage, receives more health , mana and units of defense, and also develops his unique abilities. The maximum level in the game is 25 [34] .

If an enemy combat unit dies (no matter creep or hero), experience will be gained by all allied heroes who are nearby, regardless of whether they fought or not. Thus, it is advantageous for the hero to be in the thick of the battle, without even taking part in it. If the hero delivers the last blow ( Eng. Last Hit ) to a unit or any building, then he will receive a certain amount of money [30] . In addition, gold is also given simply over time - 1 unit in 0.6 seconds. [35] .

With the available money, the hero can buy artifacts. From simple “basic” artifacts with the help of “recipes” scrolls, it is possible to compose more complex ones that have more power or additional features. Buying artifacts is an important aspect of the game; the combat potential of the hero and the team as a whole directly depends on their choice [36] .

The killed hero does not participate in the game for some time and loses part of his money. The higher his level, the longer he is out of the game and the more he loses money. The hero is reborn in his camp with full mana and health points . Instead of waiting, the player can redeem his hero - then he will be instantly reborn; the higher the level of the character, the more expensive its redemption. This feature has a recharge time, which does not allow using it several times in a row for a certain period of time [37] .

Additional features

Runes periodically appear in two places on the map (between the flanks and the central aisle), which give a temporary bonus to the hero: increase the speed of movement ( English Haste rune ), increase the speed of restoration of health and mana ( English regeneration rune ), double damage ( Eng. double damage ), invisibility ( Eng. invisibility ), the creation of doubles ( Eng. illusion ). The rune appears every 2 minutes in one of two places on the map (in the upper or lower part of the river), provided that at the moment the rune is not in any of these places [38] .

Near the center of the map is the boss Roshan ( born Roshan ); To defeat him, players usually gather as a team. After death, the Aegis of the Immortal artifact ( Rus. Aegis of Immortality ) drops out of it, giving the player the opportunity to be reborn 5 seconds after death, in the place where he died. In addition, all members of the team that killed Roshan are given money (the hero who delivered the last blow receives extra gold), and experience is only given to allied heroes who were nearby. The defeated boss is resurrected after 8-11 minutes (randomly determined). Every 5 minutes of playing time it becomes stronger, receiving additional health , armor and the ability to inflict more damage. By the 45th minute he will reach the limit and will have 12000 health units (7500 units at the beginning of the game) [39] .

Aegis of the Immortal disappears after 5 minutes. After the second victory over Roshan, in addition to Aegis, players receive cheese ( English cheese ), an expendable item that, when activated, restores 2500 health and 1000 mana [39] . After the third victory, in addition to aegis and cheese, a Refresher Shard, having similar properties to the acquired Refresher Orb item, falls out.

Perception and reviews

In different countries

Three finalists of the first World of Cyber Games defense of the ancients tournament.

The card has become popular in many countries of the world: for example, in Thailand and the Philippines it is played as much as in Counter-Strike [40] [41] . The game also received some support in the Scandinavian countries, where the Swedish DJ Basshunter wrote the song “ We sit in Ventrilo and play DotA ” ( Swedish “Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA” ), which took 116th place in the European music charts 2006 years , and in Sweden itself [42] and Finland [43] hit the top ten most popular. The popularity of the song led to an increase in the reach of the game after the publication of non-gaming publishers writing on gaming topics. Game download screensavers were also painted by fans [44] [45] .

The Russian community of players in Defense of the Ancients is quite large and active. It is represented, for the most part, by thematic forums, some of which have significant attendance. Russian players settled on all platforms, but most of them play through Garena , where the Russian section is the largest, surpassing the European and Filipino - about 45,000 people playing at a time. The Russian section includes 150 rooms for 225 people. Among advanced players, iCCup with a player rating system has become popular. Professional eSports DotA teams in Russia are few in number, but active; they attend major European and Asian tournaments. In addition, the ASUS Open tournament periodically includes DotA in the list of official disciplines [46] .

Press

In June 2008, Michael Waldbridge, a Gamasutra journalist, wrote that DotA “is most likely the most popular and most talked about free modification to the game” [4] . Pointing to a powerful community of fans of this game, Waldbridge claims that DotA is easily managed by the community itself, and this is one of the card's greatest strengths. Defense of the Ancients was listed as one of the games that inspired Gas Powered Games to create Demigod [47] [48] . GameSpy observes that the idea of the game is the Gods, "<playing> in DotA in real life" [49] . Guinsoo applied many tricks that he learned while creating DotA in Riot Games when creating the League of Legends game [10] . Another “ DotA clone” is the Heroes of Newerth game from S2 Games [50] [51] . The Russian company Nival Network in 2009 announced its new project, Prime World , whose gameplay will partially resemble DotA [52] .

Tournaments

DotA has gained some popularity over time. Blizzard officially recognized the card as noteworthy and even mentioned it in the Battle.net Hall of Fame [53] , so far only six cards had received such attention. After the map was introduced by Computer Gaming World in the new maps and modifications section for Warcraft III , and journalist Luke Smith called it “a unique real-time strategy” [54] . Allstars became an important tournament scenario, first appearing on BlizzCon in 2005. Allstars was also represented in Malaysia and Singapore at the 2005 World Cyber Games , and first appeared at the Asian Cyber Games in 2006 [55] . DotA has been included in the Cyberathlete Amateur League and CyberEvolution League line of games [56] . In addition, the card appeared in the 2008 Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) tournament [57] [58] . Oliver Paradis, ESWC manager, noted that the high level of support for the DotA community and the worldwide recognition of the map as a whole was one of the reasons for choosing it for the tournament [59] .

Championships on the local network are also very popular [59] , for example, such tournaments are often held in Asian countries, in Sweden and in Russia [40] . Blizzard points to DotA as the result of what map makers can achieve with special development tools [60] .

DotA is also extremely popular among users of the Garena gaming platform, where up to hundreds of thousands of players can be online at one time. Local tournaments and clan wars ( English Clan wars ) are held here [61] .
