Alaverdi [2] ( Armenian Ալավերդի ) is a city in the northeast of the Lori region of Armenia , located 167 km from Yerevan , with a population of 16,600 people.

Geography
The city is located 167 km from Yerevan . The Vanadzor - Tbilisi highway and the Yerevan-Tbilisi railway line with the Alaverdi station pass through the city. Located on the steep slopes of the canyon of the Debed River at an altitude of 750 to 1400 m above sea level. Known as the center of the copper industry in Armenia.

History
Alaverdi known from III - II centuries BC. er under the names "Manitsom Gom", "Manes". It was located in the historical area of Gugark . In the sources this settlement was referred to as a fortress with a settlement. Since the XIII century, it is referred to as a place of production of copper .
Until the 1930s. the name was used in the form of Allaverda; formed Turk. by the personal name of Allaverdy - “God gave” (Baskakov, 1979 ). The word "Alaverdi" is of Turkic-Arabic origin and is translated as "God-given."
In 1770, a group of Greek miners moved here, which is building a copper smelter in Alaverdi and Shamlug . The factories were destroyed in 1795 by Aga Mohammed Khan .
In 1801, the territory of Alaverdi is part of the Russian Empire . In 1887, the rights to develop the copper mine were sold to the French. The construction of the Alexandropol - Tiflis railway line ( 1899 ) and the hydropower station on the Debed river ( 1909 ) served as a powerful impetus to the development of the copper industry, as well as the city as a whole.
In 1921, the Soviet government entrenched in Alaverdi. In 1938, Alaverdi receives the status of a city, and in 1963 becomes a city of republican subordination. In the 1920s – 1930s , plants for the production of carbide , sulfuric acid , and superphosphate were commissioned. In 1957, a large copper chemical plant was built in the city.

Architecture
Alaverdi is a city with a modern layout. The first plan of the city was drawn up in 1928 - 1930 under the guidance of architect Mikhail Mazmanyan . High-rise buildings built of tufa. In memory of those killed in World War II, a monument was erected.
The medieval bridge of the XII century (1195) is preserved on the Debed river, the church of St. Grigor Narekatsi is located in Alaverdi. In the vicinity of the city there are such famous cultural monuments as the monasteries in Sanahin , Haghpat , Ahtal , Horakert , Ardvi and Odzunsky temple [5] .
City today
After the collapse of the USSR, the mine and the metallurgical complex were privatized and serve as the main supplier of jobs for the city and the surrounding area. In addition, there are enterprises of light and food industries in the city.
Sports
In the city in the early 1990s, there was a Debed football club, which took part in the Higher League of the Armenian Football Championship. Participation in the championship was unsuccessful, and soon the club was disbanded. Alaverdi handball players are champions in handball of Armenia.

Historian Alexander Yeritsyan (1842-1902), Hero of the Soviet Union Konstantin Khadzhiev , Soviet Armenian artist Albert Aslyan , famous pianist, People’s Artist of Armenia Svetlana Navasardyan , a prominent Soviet political figure of the 1930-1960-ies were born in Alaverdi. Anastas Ivanovich Mikoyan , as well as his brother, the famous Soviet aircraft designer Artyom Ivanovich Mikoyan and others.
