He graduated from the University College of London ( 1848 ), where he studied mathematics and philosophy. He was invited to the legal board, but did not practice the practice, but joined his father’s banking business. He wrote articles for various periodicals, but gained fame as a columnist and editor in chief of The Economist magazine, which was founded by his father-in-law, James Wilson . The Baset’s detailed articles on American themes had a great influence not only on public opinion, but also on the actions of British politicians.
After his death, a large number of his biographical and economic essays were published.
Paying tribute to his merits, The Economist called his weekly column on British politics in his name, Bagehot. The Association of Political Sciences also annually awards the Walter Bagehot Prize for the best dissertation in the field of government and public administration.
