In Joel Makiver’s book, the band is described as a pioneer of nu metal. Korn laid the foundation for music that combines grunge , hardcore punk and groove metal , to which funk and hip hop are often added. After more than 3 million copies of their debut self-titled album , released in 1994, were sold worldwide, Korn became one of the best-selling heavy bands in the last decade, and more than 10 million copies of their debut album were sold worldwide in 2013. History

Group Formation, Neidermeyer's Mind Demo, Korn (1993-1995)

Korn formed after the breakup of LAPD , a possible cause of which was the drug addiction of the band's vocalist, Richard Morill. Reginald Arvizu , Brian Welch , James Schaffer and David Silveria wanted to continue to make music and began to search for a new vocalist. One night in 1993, Head and Monkey were at a nightclub and planned to stay there for just a few minutes. But that all changed when the band Sexart came onto the scene. Head and Monkey became interested in the vocalist, Jonathan Davis - at first they did not like his voice, but then they decided that he was very good. Head and Monkey met him after the performance. At first, Davis did not want to become their vocalist, but after consulting with a psychic who told him that he would do something stupid if he didn’t try, Davis agreed. So the Creep group was formed, and later renamed Korn, the name of which was invented by Jonathan Davis.

Later in 1993, they started working with their friend and producer Ross Robinson and soon released their first demo, Neidermeyer's Mind , which included 4 tracks: Predictable , Blind , Daddy and Alive . Blind was originally written by Davis and Sexart, but was rewritten with new lyrics. Korn had problems attracting attention in his first year of existence due to the fact that the rock scene in the 1990s unconditionally belonged to grunge . After numerous attempts to agree on a record, the band was heard in a nightclub by Paul Pontius from Immortal / Epic Records . He was so impressed with the group that he signed a contract with them right on the spot. With producer and label Korn began work on the album of the same name .

From a musical point of view, the tracks on the album were a mixture of hardcore punk and groove metal . Also on the album were bagpipes in the song Shoots and Ladders and scat singing (improvising a melody with a meaningless set of syllables) in the song Ball Tongue . Both of these elements later became permanent features of Korn's signature sound. “Blind” was the first single from the album and became extremely popular among the fans of the group, becoming at that time the most famous song of the group.

The album opens with a Blind song, an exclamation of “Are you ready ?!” (Are you ready ?!) and a heavy guitar sound. The sound was also special, because Monkey paired with Head tuned his 7-string guitars lower than usual (one tone) and played with complete disregard for traditional harmonic structures.

When the Korn album was released on October 11, 1994 , the band began to tour continuously without any support from radio or video channels, since the album was boycotted by most of the largest radio stations and music channels in the United States. The only consolation was the intense live performances that became a real cult subject among fans. With significant support from fans of the group, Korn reached 72nd place on the Billboard 200 in 1996 , and the song “Shoots and Ladders” received a Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Metal Performance” [6] .

During their first big tour, Korn played the opening act with Danzig along with Marilyn Manson . Korn also played in 1995 as the opening act for bands such as Megadeth , 311 , Fear Factory , Flotsam and Jetsam and KMFDM . Also, their first tour was remembered for the fact that they performed with the Deftones at the opening act of Ozzy Osbourne . After performing with lesser-known bands such as Dimestore Hoods , Sugar Ray and Life of Agony , Korn returned to the studio to record their second album.

Life Is Peachy (1996-1997)

Korn again took advantage of Robinson's help to record their second album, Life Is Peachy , released on October 15, 1996 . The album turned out to be bolder than the previous work of the group, with a torn sound. The album consists of many different songs: Porno Creep used a guitar imitation of the soundtracks for pornographic films of the 1970s; War's Lowrider cover with Davis Bagpipes and vocal part performed by Head; Twist , a track only 49 seconds long, with Davis scat singing; and track K @ # ø%! , whose vocabulary provoked the indignation of champions of morality of all stripes.

For successful promotion of the album, Korn played on the opening act of Metallica , simultaneously starting to use the latest promotion tool - the Internet . The strategy worked: in the first week, over 106 thousand copies of Life is Peachy were sold and the album reached 3rd place on the Billboard 200 [1] . The first single, No Place to Hide , was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" [6] . ADIDAS became the second single of the group, after which there were suggestions that the song is an advertising move of the famous clothing brand. However, in reality, as can be understood from the text, the name of the song is an abbreviation of the phrase All day I dream about sex ( Eng. - All Day I Dream About Sex ).

Another decisive factor that boosted the band's popularity was a joint performance with Tool as the main bands at the 1997 Lollapalooza Music Festival. Unfortunately, Korn was forced to interrupt their performances due to the aggravation of meningitis in Monkey . Also this year, Korn continued to cross musical styles, recording the song Kick the PA with The Dust Brothers . This track also appeared on the Soundtrack soundtrack.

Later in 1997 , Korn organized their own label, Elementree Records . The first band to sign a label with the label was Orgy (which included former Sexart musician Ryan Shack), who brought Elementree their first platinum album, Candyass . Over the next few years, contracts were signed with bands Videodrone , Deadsy , and with rapper Marz .

Follow The Leader (1998-1999)

Ahead of the release of their third album, Korn is launching a weekly online TV show called Korn TV [7] [8] . The show allowed you to follow the process of recording the album, with the participation of such invited celebrities as porn star Ron Jeremy , Limp Bizkit and 311 [8] . The show also made it possible for Korn fans to call and ask the group questions - a similar opportunity was new, music groups were just starting to use the Internet in this way [9] . On August 18, 1998, Korn released their third album, Follow the Leader [10] , which featured a host of guest celebrities such as Ice Cube , Tre Hardson from The Pharcyde , Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit and film actor Chich Marin on the hidden track Earache My Eye (written by Marin in his own hand, the main guitar riff of the song sounded in the movie “ Stoned ”, where Marin starred) [9] .

Quite unexpectedly for everyone, the group was socially active, open to its fans and even merciful. Once they received an invitation from one of their fans to call on him for a few minutes. The 14-year-old boy, as it turned out from his letter, had cancer in the last stage. The musicians were initially taken aback, but agreed. Several minutes grew into several hours, and then the whole day, which inspired Korn to create the song “ Justin ” (Justin, that was the name of the boy).

To attract attention to the release of the new album, Korn organized a tour stylized as an election campaign. The tour carried the group on a chartered plane across North America with news of the Follow the Leader . At each stop during the tour, the group organized special “fan conferences” during which the musicians talked with Korn fans, answered their questions and signed autographs.

The album successfully started, taking first place on the Billboard with the result of 268 thousand copies sold [11] , and the singles Got the Life and Freak on a Leash followed. Both singles introduced Korn to a wider audience thanks to MTV video clips.

The cover for Follow the Leader was drawn by Spawn franchise artist Greg Capullo . The animated part of the Freak on a Leash video was directed by Todd MacFarlane (creator of Spawn and former Spider-Man comic book artist). Live filming was staged by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris , using innovative technologies that allowed the camera to monitor the flight of a bullet through various scenes.

The Freak on a Leash video won the Grammy Award for “Best Music Video” and was nominated for “Best Hard Rock Work” [12] . The video also received nine nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards [13] :

  • Video of the year
  • Best Rock Video
  • Video Break
  • Best directing
  • The best special effects
  • Best Artwork
  • Best cinematography
  • Best installation
  • People's Choice Award

As a result, two awards were received: Best Rock Video and Best Editing. Follow the Leader is the band's most commercially successful album, five times becoming platinum according to the RIAA with nearly 10 million copies sold worldwide.

In the same year, Korn launched their own annual tour, called the Family Values Tour . Korn acted as headliners for this highly successful tour. Also attended by Incubus , Orgy , Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube and Rammstein . Concert CDs and DVDs were released, which received the status of a gold and platinum disc, respectively. In 1999, Limp Bizkit became the headliners of the tour (originally they were supposed to be System of a Down ), Primus , Staind , The Crystal Method , Ja Rule , Method Man & Redman , Mobb Deep , and Fliter (during the Mobb Deep tour were replaced on DMX ). Korn did not take part in the concert program. Instead, Korn accidentally appeared several times at the concert as a surprise and to present to the public their first single from the new album. In 2000, the tour was suspended.

Issues (1999-2001)

The band's fourth album, Issues , produced by Brendan O'Brien , was released on November 16, 1999 [14] . The cover was designed by Alfredo Carlos, a Korn fan who won a contest between fans on MTV [15] . Issues was released at the same time as the highly anticipated albums and, nevertheless, debuted in the Billboard 200 in first place [16] , overtaking the long-awaited album by Dr. Dre 2001 and a collection of the best hits from Celine Dion [16] .

To celebrate the release of Issues , the group organized a concert with an album program in front of a live audience at the Apollo Theater in New York with simultaneous broadcasting on many radio stations [17] . This performance made Korn the first rock band and the second “white” music band to ever perform at Apollo, after the legendary Buddy Holly , who visited here in 1950 [18] . The concert was supported by the New York Police Department Drum Orchestra and the piper band led by Richard Gibbs. [18]

Earlier in the year, Korn appeared in an episode of the animated series South Park . An excellent Korn band mystery about a pirate ghost in which the first single from Issues “ Falling Away from Me ” premiered [19] [20] . Korn released two more singles with Issues , Make Me Bad and Somebody Someone , both of which performed well on Billboard.Video clips were shot for all three singles, the director of Falling Away from Me was Korn's old friend Fred Durst , Martin Weitz worked on Make Me Bad and Somebody Someone , which made extensive use of computer special effects . Issues , according to critics, has become less influenced by hip-hop and has become more related to alternative metal than to new metal [14] . The album went triple platinum, ranking second in commercial success after Follow the Leader .

Untouchables (2002—2003)

Take a Look in the Mirror , Greatest Hits Vol. 1 , уход Хэда (2003—2005)

Шестой альбом Korn, Take a Look in the Mirror , вышел 21 ноября 2003, на четыре дня раньше запланированной даты релиза из-за утечки альбома в Интернет [24] . Korn самостоятельно спродюсировали альбом и выпустили синглы « Right Now », « Y'All Want a Single » и « Everything I've Known ». «Right Now» и «Everything I've Known» представляли собой анимационные клипы, а в «Y'All Want a Single» Korn вместе с большой группой фанатов разрушали аудиомагазин. Альбом достиг девятой строчки в Billboard, с 179 тыс. проданных копий в первые семь дней.

On October 5, 2004, Korn released a collection of top hits, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 [25] . The album debuted in fourth place on the Billboard, with 129,000 copies sold. [26] The album contained two cover versions, also released as singles, and a selection of the band’s best songs over 10 years. The first single was a cover version of the song “ Word Up! "The Cameo group [27] . The second single contained a potpourri of all three parts of Pink Floyd 's Another Brick in the Wall and a remix of Freak on a Leash, which was included as a bonus track in the single. The album’s special edition included the Korn: Live at CBGB DVD containing seven selected songs from the Korn concert on November 24, 2003 at CBGB [28] .

Before Korn began work on his next album, Brian “Head” Welch announced that he “... chose the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior and decided to end his musical career” [29] and officially leaves Korn. The rumors that this is all a joke or a hoax have not been confirmed. Welch began to lead a spiritual life, was baptized in the waters of the Jordan River and began to speak openly about his faith and beliefs, especially on his website Head to Christ . The departure of Welch was the first change in the composition in the history of the group.

A few weeks after leaving the band, Welch mentioned a solo album he was working on, but no release date or contract with any record label was given [30] . Welch later signed with Fortitude Music. His album Save Me from Myself did not come out several times by the appointed date and as a result was released only in July 2008.

2005-2006: See You on the Other Side

After completing their partnership with Sony, Korn decided to work with EMI and signed a contract with Virgin Records . After concluding an agreement with EMI, as part of the contract, the company paid the group $ 25 million for the right to receive part of the profits from the sales of the next two Korn studio albums, including profits from the tour and the sale of paraphernalia. EMI also received a 30% share of the group’s other revenues [31] [32] .

Korn’s first album, Virgin, See You on the Other Side , was released on December 6, 2005 [33] and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, nearly reaching 221,000 copies sold [34] . The album remained in the top 100 on the Billboard 200 for 34 weeks. The first single from the album, “ Twisted Transistor ”, was accompanied by a parody video directed by Dave Meyers, in which rap stars Xzibit , Lil Jon , Snoop Dogg and Banner, David portrayed musicians Korn [35] . The single reached number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and number nine on the Modern Rock chart [23] . The second single, “ Coming Undone, ” reached number 4 on the Mainstream Rock chart and number 14 on Modern Rock [23] , and the companion video clip directed by Little X was heavily broadcast on music channels [36] .

On January 13, 2006, Korn organized a press conference at the Hollywood Forever cemetery to announce the start of a tour in support of See You on the Other Side [37] . 10 Years and Mudvayne became the warm-up groups for the tour, which kicked off in Korn's hometown of Bakersfield on February 24, 2006. Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall officially declared the day “Korn Day” [38] . On April 18, 2006, the renewal of the Family Values Tour was announced with headliners Deftones , Stone Sour and Flyleaf , as well as Japanese rock band Dir en gray as an invited guest [39] . On the 2007 Family Values Tour, Korn and Evanescence became the headliners of the tour, which featured Atreyu , Hellyeah and Trivium [40] .

During the promotion of See You on the Other Side in Europe, Jonathan Davis was hospitalized with a blood disease and was unable to attend the annual Download Festival [41] . The band itself performed with guest vocalists such as Corey Taylor from Slipknot / Stone Sour , Des Fafar from Devildriver , Benji Webbe from Skindred and M.Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold . Also due to Davis's illness, Korn was forced to cancel their remaining European concerts in 2006, including a performance at the Hellfest Summer Open Air . The public did not know what to expect, but to the relief of the fans of the group, Davis published a letter in which he said that he had been found “dangerously few platelets and there was a high probability of hemorrhage if they had not paid attention to the problem” [42] .

MTV Unplugged, Untitled, The departure of David Silveria (2006-2008)

On December 9, 2006, Korn performed at MTV's Times Square Studios as part of the MTV Unplugged acoustic concert series . The concert was broadcast on February 23 at MTV.com, and on March 2, 2007 it was broadcast on MTV in North and South America, Europe and Asia. In front of an audience of about 50 people, Korn played an acoustic concert of 14 songs with guest musicians from The Cure and Amy Lee from Evanescence . The performance material was eventually reduced to 11 tracks for the album, two of which were not broadcast on MTV. In its first week of sales, the MTV Unplugged: Korn album sold approximately 51,000 copies and reached No. 9 on the Billboard [43] .

The unnamed album Korn Untitled was released on July 31, 2007 and debuted in second place on the Billboard with a circulation of 123 thousand copies sold in the first week [44] . Untitled received the status of a gold disc for supplying stores with over 500,000 copies [45] . The album completed an agreement with Virgin Records and was created with the participation of keyboardist Zack Baird , who performs with the group on tours. Zack's contribution helped give the tracks a deeper, atmospheric sound [46] . The duties of the drummer were performed by Terry Bozzio , Jonathan Davis and the drummer of Bad Religion Brooks Wackerman , since David Silveria announced his “vacation” for at least one studio album and tour [47] . Given the fact that so far there have been no official news about the status of David Silveria in the group at the moment, many fans of the group are of the opinion that David left the group forever. The premiere of " Evolution " , the first single from the Untitled album, was held at the radio station in Los Angeles. The single reached number 4 on Mainstream Rock and 20th on Modern Rock. The video for the single was shot by Dave Meyers . The second single, “ Hold On, ” has so far reached number 9 on the Mainstream Rock chart.

Remember Who You Are, The Path Of Totality, The Paradigm Shift, The Serenity Of Suffering (2008—2018)

Korn was nominated along with 31 more artists for the title of “Best Artist 2007” on Fuse in November 2007. The group reached the final round, but lost 30 Seconds to Mars with a score of about 200 thousand votes.

Ubisoft, a gaming publisher, said in October that "Korn composed and recorded a new Haze song dedicated to the game of the same name, " which was released May 20, 2008. For the first time, a song written by a group for the gaming industry did not become an ordinary download supplement that comes bundled with the game, but was released as a full single and equipped with a video clip.

At the beginning of 2008, the group was on the European part of the Bitch We Have a Problem Tour with former drummer David Lee Roth Ray Luzier on drums [48] , after which the group went to South America and Australia, and then held concerts in the United Arab Emirates and South Africa [49] .

After the performances, the group took a break and decides whether to start recording their ninth studio album [50] or to participate as a headliner in the new Family Values Tour [51] .

On January 16, 2008, Korn announced on their official website that James Schaffer had left the tour due to his father's illness. Jonathan Davis said they would continue the tour without James. Contrary to rumors that James left the group, Shane Gibson confirmed on Kornspace.com that his [Monkey] father is sick and that Monkey is not leaving the group. A few weeks later, Monkey returned to the group.

Korn released a new DVD, Korn: Live In Montreux 2004 , featuring a 2004 concert, when the line-up has not yet changed. In addition, a new compilation of the band’s best hits, Playlist: The Very Best Of Korn , was released on April 29, 2008.

Jonathan Davis at some concerts of his solo tour Alone I Play told the audience that he has an interest in returning Head that "I miss this bastard and one day, people, he will be back." In turn, in an interview with Brian, he said that he was not ready to return at the moment, although this option is possible.

Korn announced their performance in the English Download Festival on June 12, 2009, as sub-headliners of the Faith No More tour, which will also feature Marilyn Manson , Slipknot , Motley Crue , Whitesnake , Def Leppard , Dream Theater , Billy Talent , Limp Bizkit , Pendulum , Buckcherry , Dragonforce , Anvil , The Blackout and The Prodigy .

In an interview with Davis about the new album, he said the following: “It will be very rude and similar to the first albums, this is an old school record. In general, this time we will record as a group of 4 people, where the guitars are Monkey, Field bass, Ray drums and I-vocals. We really want to go back to our old style. This record will be very dynamic and emotional and, as you understand, I have accumulated aggression, which I want to put on this album. Most of the lyrics on the album will be about organized religion. ”

The group is still looking for a new label for the release of an as-yet unnamed album after the end of a 2-disc contract with Virgin Records in 2007.

In an interview with Star Central, it was confirmed that drummer Ray Luzier, as a member of the back-up band, became a full member of Korn, thereby completely replacing David Silveria.

In the middle of summer 2010, Korn's new album, “ Korn III: Remember Who You Are ”, went on sale.

At E3 2011, it was announced that the group would write the title topic for the computer game Silent Hill: Downpour , possibly featuring Mary Elizabeth McGlynn [52] .

December 6, 2011 released the album The Path of Totality .

In the summer of 2012, in support of the new album, the group performed with concerts in Russia and Ukraine. As part of the tour, the musicians visited Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Kiev.

In May 2013, Head returned to the group after 8 years of absence. Musicians have announced that their new album, The Paradigm Shift , will be released on October 8, 2013. At the moment, he is ready and was given to listen to several journalists. Judging by their reviews, Korn was able to maintain their style of performance, while partially integrating dubstep sound into it. On September 30, the album was posted online. The album received mixed reviews. In particular, for music critics and fans, the group’s decision to shoot a clip for the song “Never never”, marked by the latter as “extremely poppin”, was a surprise. However, there was an answer from Davis that the group specifically chose this song to see the reaction of the listeners. Also, critics and fans of the group noticed that Davis's voice sounds sick and tired on the album, which may be due to his son’s serious illness and the musician’s problems with medications; that there was no hint of the aggressive sounding of Fieldy’s bass (“it used to seem that his strings were not stretched, but steel chains, but now ...”), that the guitar parts of Head and Monkey used to sound like they were painting a picture, but the last album, the light beginnings of the previous manner of performance can be heard only in the song “Spike in My Veins”. But with all this, the album turned out to be by no means a passing one, but very strong, not every modern rock group can give out such work, which includes the songs “Mass Hysteria”, “Love & Meth” and, of course, “What We Do”. And Fieldy's “thrashing” slap bass is still heard beyond praise at the group’s concerts, from which it can be concluded that the album owes its “combed” sound to sound engineers and sound engineers, but is not a consequence of the degradation of the musicians.

In the spring of 2014, Korn presented their new album to Russian and Belarusian fans. Together with the musicians from Soulfly , who also recorded the new Savages album, the musicians played concerts in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Nizhny Novgorod, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar and Minsk.

Soon, Korn began the process of writing new songs for their twelfth studio album. Head guitarist described the music on the new album as "harder than anyone else has heard from us for a long time [53] ." On July 14, 2016, guitarist James “Munky” Schaffer told Metal Hammer that Slipknot / Stone Sour's Corey Taylor would appear as a guest on the new album [54] . He also revealed that Nick Raskulinech is the producer of the album [55] . On July 16, 2016, at the Chicago Open Air Festival, Korn introduced the new song, “Rotting in Vain [56] ”. The Serenity of Suffering was released on October 21, 2016.

The Nothing (2018 — present)

According to Instagram recordings by Korn drummer Ray Luzier , Korn began the drumming process for the upcoming thirteenth album. [57] Brian Welch told Revolver magazine the anticipated release date is Fall 2019 and named Nick Raskulinets as a producer. He also stated that some of the tracks were co-written with John Feldman and that the band recorded a demo with Travis Barker on drums [58] . On June 25, it became known that the album was called The Nothing and will be released on September 13, and the first single from the album “You'll Never Find Me” was also revealed [59] .
