Career start in the USSR

As a symphonic conductor he made his debut at the age of 18 in Estonia, as an opera conductor as a conductor of the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after S. M. Kirova with Georges Bizet ’s opera Carmen .

In 1963 , he became the chief conductor of two groups at once: the Estonian Television and Radio Symphony Orchestra (transformed into the Estonian SSR State Symphony Orchestra in 1975 ) and the Estonian Opera and Ballet Theater Orchestra . Since 1976 , he focused on working with a symphony orchestra. In the 1960s, after numerous tours of the republics of the former USSR and Eastern Europe with the Theater named after Kirova became widely known far beyond Estonia.

International Career

Jarvi began his international career in 1971 , after winning the Italian Academy of Music Academy of Santa Cecilia in Italy . This event was followed by invitations from around the world from many famous orchestras and famous opera houses.

In 1980, Järvi with his family left the Soviet Union and moved to the United States , since 1987 a US citizen. In 1982 - 2004 Chief Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra , simultaneously in 1984 - 1988 led the Scottish National Orchestra , and from 1990 - 2005 Detroit Symphony Orchestra . He was also the main guest conductor of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra ( 1981 - 1983 ) and others. Since 2005 , the main conductor of the Hague Residence Orchestra - one of the three leading orchestras of the Netherlands (famous in Russia , in particular, for what it has been for them over the past years Yevgeny Svetlanov led his life). He regularly performs with the London Symphony Orchestra , the Amsterdam Concertgebouw , the Paris Orchestra and other leading groups in the world.

In 2010, he again headed the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra ; a few months later decided to leave him because of disagreements with the Ministry of Culture, but returned to the next season and continued to work with the orchestra.

Over the past 12 years, he has performed 1,119 concerts in 125 cities, leading 72 different orchestras.

Among other things, Järvi is known as the performer of many rarely performed and little-known symphonic scores. Among the recordings made by the conductor are the complete collections of symphonies by Hugo Alfven , Samuel Barber , Alexander Borodin , Antonin Dvorak , Vasily Kalinnikov , Boguslav Martin , Karl Nielsen , Sergei Prokofiev , Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov , Jan Sibelius , Kurt Atterberg , Wildeberg Eduardg Wardberg , Wilduberg , Zdenek Fibikh , Dmitry Shostakovich , all operas by Sergey Rachmaninov , collection of symphonic compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven , Edward Grieg , Antonin Dvořák , Jan Sibelius .

Since 2012, the musical director of the Orchestra of Romanesque Switzerland . The contract with Järvi was concluded for three seasons until August 31, 2015 .

The two sons of Neeme Järvi, Paavo and Kristjan Järvi, are also professional conductors.

Awards and titles

He was awarded many prizes and honorary titles. Among other things, he is an Honorary Doctor of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater , universities in Detroit , Aberdeen ( Scotland ), Gothenburg . He has the unspoken title “ Estonian of the Century” at home and is an honorary citizen of Pärnu . Laureate of the first prize of the International Competition of the Music Academy of Santa Cecilia (1971, Rome ). For concert programs from 1974-1976 he was awarded the USSR State Prize [1] .
