History
The Orthodox parish in Cleveland was preceded by the Society of St. Nicholas, founded at the end of 1895 , founded on the advice of the priest John Kochurov . Members of the Society were 23 Rusyns , former parishioners of the local Uniate parish, who converted to Orthodoxy [3] . The society was officially registered on September 28, 1896 .
In 1896, on the corner of the Literary Road and West 6th, a small parish building was built, where on October 19, Bishop Nicholas (Ziorov) consecrated a church in the name of St. Theodosius of Chernigov [4] [5] .
In the first years the parish school was founded.
In 1902, a parish from the congregation of the Augustinian sisters acquired for $ 30,000 a territory (30 acres) of St. Joseph's convent, located on West 7th and Starkweather Avenue. On its territory the streets of St. Olga and St. Tikhon, and 80 plots sold to parishioners. In the stone building (address Starkweather, 64) were placed the church (on the second floor), the school and the apartment of the priest. On the third floor there was a men's school called Bursa, in which boys from all over the country studied.
In 1905, the parish was 15 families [6] . In 1909, the parish acquired land in the Brooklyn area to set up a cemetery. In 1910, the building of the house church was constantly crowded.
On September 23, 1911, a new stone church was laid. The plan of the cathedral was developed by Frederick C Baird . Donations amounting to $ 70,000 were collected for the construction of a new church, and Nicholas II was among the donors.
The cathedral was fully consecrated by Bishop Alexander (Nemolovsky) on July 20, 1913 [7] .
By the mid -1930s, the cathedral choir was famous throughout Cleveland, he gave concerts at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and many non-Orthodox residents of the city came to listen to services performed by him.
In 1936, the Fifth All-American Church Council was held in the temple, and in 1946 the historic Seventh All-American Church Council was held.
In 1953, a Sunday parochial school was opened. During this period, there were 1,200 families in the parish.
In 1950, an extensive reconstruction of the cathedral began, which ended in consecration on October 3, 1954 .
Since the late 1950s , the clergy began to serve the liturgy, along with Church Slavonic, and in English.
By 1974, the number of parishioners dropped to 600 families, but the church continued to be an important religious and cultural center of the city. The temple regularly gave choral concerts, and also organized in 1980 an exhibition of Russian art.
In the early 2000s, the cathedral was restored and re-consecrated by Theodosius, the Metropolitan of all America and Canada, in September 2001 [8] .
Architecture, decoration
The cathedral is located in the town of Tremont of Cleveland.
The building of the temple was built in a pseudo-Byzantine style and surmounted by a large dome and a 12th smaller one. It is considered one of the best representatives of Russian church architecture in the United States. The prototype was the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow , the photographs of which were handed over to the architect by the rector of the parish.
Icons for the cathedral were brought from Russia.
The following images are placed in the iconostasis: Lower row (from left to right) - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archangel Michael, the Most Holy Theotokos, Savior, Archangel Gabriel, St. Theodosius of Chernigov; the middle row is the Last Supper, on the sides are various saints; the top row is of the Holy Trinity, on the sides are 12 apostles. Above - Crucifixion with the upcoming Most Holy Theotokos and John the Forerunner.
The mural of the church in 1950–1954 was carried out by Yugoslav artist Andrei Bitsenko .
