Biography
Born on September 5, 1695 in Stockholm, in the family of the famous architect Nicodemus Tessin Jr. (1654-1728) and Countess Hedwig Stenbock (1658-1714).
Tessin showed an early inclination to art, and at the end of his education he, with the support of Queen Mother Hedwig Eleonora Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and King Charles XII, went on a trip to France, Italy and Germany. During his stay in Vienna in 1718, Tessin accepted the offer of Charles XII to take up the post of gof-quartermaster. Returning to his homeland, he joined the supporters of the Holstein party , which in the Riksdag in 1723 won for him the post of chairman of the Small Secret Deputation .
Having become a freelance clerical adviser in 1724, Tessin, with the assistance of Arvid Gorn, became a member of the Secret Commission ( sekreta kommission ). After a break between the Gorny and the Holstein parties, in 1725 Tessin was sent as envoy to Vienna, where he, however, with all his strength opposed the Gorn line in foreign policy. Being appointed in 1728 as the chief occupant of all the royal castles, buildings and gardens in the state, in 1728-1729 he undertook a new trip abroad.
When the so-called party of “hats” began to take shape in the Riksdag in 1734, he joined her supporters. In 1735 he again went envoy to Vienna, from where he was recalled a year later.

On the Riksdag of 1738, “hats” put forward his candidacy for the post of lant-marshal . After receiving this position, Tessin actively contributed to the overthrow of the Horn and the coming of the “hats” to power.
In 1739, he was appointed Swedish minister to Paris , where he remained until 1742, trying to win the support of France in the looming war with Russia. There he managed to conclude a trade agreement advantageous to Sweden (1741). In 1741 he was appointed a member of the riksrod and on his return from Paris in 1742, he was appointed advisor to the State Chancellery.
When the unfortunate outcome of the Russian-Swedish war for Sweden became clear and discontent began to grow against its initiators, in 1743 Tessin resigned from the post of member of the riksrod and demanded an investigation of his actions. As a result, the Secret Committee gave them a positive assessment, and the estates called on the king to persuade him to remain on the council.
In 1743, the election of Adolf Fredrik heir to the throne caused an aggravation of Danish-Swedish relations, in connection with which Tessin was sent as ambassador to Copenhagen, where he managed to prevent a looming war. In 1744, he headed the embassy to Berlin, which was supposed to bring from there the crown prince's bride Lovisa Ulric.
In 1745, Tessin became the chancellor of the Abos Academy , as well as the chairman of the Legislative Commission and the chief marshal at the court of the crown prince. Since 1747 - President of the Military Collegium . In the same year he took the office of President of the Office .
In 1751, Tessin was appointed to the post of Ober Marshal of the Queen. At this time, he had to lead the forces in the Council, who opposed the plans of the court party to strengthen the royal power, in connection with which he incurred the king's disfavor and was forced to resign as president of the Chancellery. In 1760, Tessin was appointed the chairman of the Legislative Commission for the second time, but a year later he left all his posts and spent the rest of his life on his estate in Okörö in Södermanland , where he died on January 7, 1770.
Tessin was the patron and friend of the artist Gustaf Lundberg , whom he met in France, and, returning to Sweden, he obtained the position of court painter for him.
