Childhood

I fell in love with skateboarding for being individual. There are no teams in it, there are no captains in it ... it is completely different from other sports that I have seen - it is creative. I can go to the skate park with my skateboard. I love skateboarding.

I fell in love with skateboarding because it was individual. There were no teams, there were no captains ... it was completely opposite of what I saw in so many sports: It was creative. I could walk around with my skateboard at the skate park. I love skateboarding.
- Rodney Mullen, 2003 [1]

Rodney Mullen was born on August 17, 1966 in Gainesville , Florida . He started skateboarding on January 1, 1977, and promised his father that he would stop as soon as he was seriously injured. Rodney began to ride in a full set of protective equipment. At the same time, he begins to chat with friends of his sister, who also engaged in skateboarding [2] .

1990s - Today

In the early 90s, due to the decrease in the popularity of freestyle, Mullen switched from him to street style [3] .

In 1991, Mullen joins the Plan B. pro-skater team, Mike Ternasky , the founder of Plan B, influenced Mullen’s skiing style. As a result, in the Questionable video (1992), Mullen rides in the street style. In this video, he shows previously unknown tricks such as Triple Kickflip, Kickflip Underflip, and Casper Slide.

In 1993, the video “Virtual Reality” was released. In it, Mullen shows a new trick - Darkslide.

I could not wait until I woke up ... Often I could not fall asleep because I wanted to try something new. How many people felt this way?

- Rodney Mullen, 2003 [1]

In 1994, after the death of Mike Ternaski, Mullen left Plan B. In 1997, he founded the company A-Team [2] . In the same year, Rodney Mullen invited his friend, professional skater Daewon Song , to star in the video Rodney Mullen vs. Daewon Song. "

Later, at the turn of the 90s, Mullen “appeared” in Russia in the cult film “Reaching the Impossible” (Gleaming the Cube) starring Christian Slater. Famous professionals such as Tony Hawk , Stacy Peralta, Mike Vallely and others starred in this feature film. Rodney duplicated the main character in particularly difficult tricks. His two-minute “solo” on a skateboard at the very end of the film impresses skaters of all generations, and even people who are far from sports.

In 2003, Mullen released an autobiography , The Mutt: How to skateboard and not kill yourself.
