The destroyer Ross is named after Captain Donald C. Ross (1910-1992), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor .
Ross is equipped with Aegis combat information and control system; Tomahawk cruise missile launchers, RIM-156 SM-2 anti-aircraft missiles or RUM-139 VL-Asroc anti-submarine missiles; as well as various machine gun and cannon weapons. The ship can take on board one helicopter Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk .
On April 7, 2017, the destroyer participated in the Tomahawk cruise missile strike on the Syrian air base of Al-Shairat .
