Geography and climate

Gauteng is the only province in the country that has no coastline or borders with other countries. It borders with the provinces of Free State (in the south), North-West (in the west), Mpumalanga (in the east) and Limpopo (in the north). The southern boundary of Gauteng runs along the Vaal River . Most of the territory is located on the plateau High Veld (about 1500 m above sea level). Between Pretoria and Johannesburg stretched ridges and hills of the mountains Magalisberg and Witwatersrand .

The climate of the region is subtropical, but strongly depends on the height above sea level. In Pretoria (1300 m above sea level) and Johannesburg (1700 m) it is rather cool.
