Biography
Born in the village of Demyanka, Belitsky district of the Mogilev province of the Russian Empire [2] .
With the enactment of the judicial charters of 1864, he was elected justice of the peace in St. Petersburg and after O. I. Kvista was chairman of the St. Petersburg world congress.
Since 1874, he was chief prosecutor of the 4th Department of the Senate , and since 1876, he was a senator .
From 1884 to 1886, he was the head of the institutions of the Empress Maria .
Since 1898 - Member of the Council of State , and since 1902 - Chairman of the Department of Civil and Spiritual Affairs, and. D. General Manager of the Imperial Chancellery.
December 6, 1905 he was appointed Governor-General of the Grand Duchy of Finland (the first civilian rank in this post) and governed in a liberal spirit; with it, the new charter of the Seimas of 1906 was enacted. When the reaction escalated, he was supposed to leave this post on February 2, 1908, under pressure from the conservative majority of the Duma .
After the revolution, as a result of negotiations between the USSR and Finland, Nikolai Gerard (as well as the governor-general V. A. Bekman who succeeded him) was able to travel to Finland and settled with his wife in a sanatorium in Khalil (later the Sosnovy Bor sanatorium on territory of the Polyansky rural settlement ) [3] . There he lived until his death on December 9, 1929 [4] .
