Ludwig Ludwigovich Bonstedt ( German: Ludwig Bohnstedt ; October 15, 1822 , St. Petersburg - January 3, 1885 , Gotha ) - German and Russian architect, academician and professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts .

Biography

In 1831 - 1839 he studied at the Main German School of St. Peter , after which he left for Germany to continue his studies. He entered the philosophical department of the University of Berlin ( German Humboldt-UniversitΓ€t zu Berlin ), but almost immediately left it and in 1840 entered the Berlin School of Construction ( German Berliner Bauschule ), and then the Berlin Academy of Arts ( German Akademie der KΓΌnste, Berlin ). After graduating from the Berlin Academy in 1843 he returned to St. Petersburg and entered the service of the workshop of the architect R. A. Zhelyazevich.

 
Latvian National Opera

He was a freelance student at the Imperial Academy of Arts . He received the title of free artist (1843) at the Academy of Fine Arts for the project of the β€œprovincial house” . Received the title of academician of architecture (1846) for the project of "public baths" . [4] In 1851, he took up the post of senior architect at the court of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna . In this capacity, Bonstedt carried out restoration work in the princess's palace on Kamenny Island , in her residence in Oranienbaum .

Independent activities of Ludwig Bonstedt began in 1849. At this time, he rebuilt the private houses of R.V. Ritter ( Cadet line VO , 11) and S.R. Brandt ( Cadet line VO , 15). In 1850, the architect reconstructed the mansion of A.I. Thomsen-Bonnard (40 Angliyskaya embankment ), Shchigelsky mansion ( 6 Glinka St. ), the mansion of K. K. Zadler ( 8th line VO , 25), the apartment building R N. Geimburger ( 1st line VO , 28), the building of the Main Society of Russian Railways ( Italianskaya 17,). Liteiny pr. , 42

The 1850s became the most productive for Ludwig Bonstedt. He combined design activities with the service in the Department of Water and Land Communications, with the work of the architect of the Salamander Insurance Company.

In 1851-1852, Bonstedt built the house of Countess A.R. Lamsdorf (Mokhovaya St., 20). The architect reconstructed the production facilities of the sugar factory of the merchant M.E. Kara, the Kalinkin Brewery, the Nevsky Stearin and the Soap Factory.

 
Bank of Finland

In 1853, Bonstedt accepted the proposal to complete the work begun by the architect N.E. Efimov - the house of the Minister of State Property ( Isaakievskaya Square , 13), the building of the City Council ( Dumskaya St. , 1-3) and the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent ( Moscow Ave. , 100 ) In the same year, Bonstedt left public service.

One of the most significant works of Ludwig Bonstedt in St. Petersburg was the palace of Princess Z. N. Yusupova ( Liteiny pr ., 42), which was built from 1852 to 1858.

Ludwig Bonstedt taught in his architectural studio. Among his students were W. Schroeter , G. Schel . In 1862, the Petersburg Circle of Architects, which later became the St. Petersburg Society of Architects, was housed in the architect's workshop. In 1858, Bonstedt was awarded the title of professor and the rank of court counselor.

One of Bonstedt's latest works was the erection of the bell tower of the church of the Great Martyr Catherine ( Kadetskaya VO line , 27a).

In 1861, the architect left for Germany to improve health. There he stayed to live, settled in the city of Gotha . Further architectural activities of the architect took place in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Finland and Portugal.
