Kangaroo is a Soviet and Russian musical group founded in 1989 in Penza .
Determining the genre in which the group plays is extremely difficult. Artemy Troitsky described him as the “new Russian reggae ”, although even when “Kangaroo” plays reggae, Central Asian motifs clearly dominate. In general, even within the framework of one concert things can be performed in the most bizarre genres - from urban romance and folk to psychedelic rock and ska . The creative heyday of the group came at the beginning of the 1990s - the time of active parties, club activities, endless trips to festivals in Russia and Ukraine . Thousands of people across the country whistled obsessive motifs from the group’s magnetic albums spreading with incredible speed. For many, the “Kangaroo” has remained a clear sign of the “nostalgic nineties,” however, the collective still exists, giving from five to ten concerts a year, not counting the closed performances.
Currently, most members of the group live in Moscow .

History
The first concert of the Kangaroo group took place on April 18, 1989 in the Penza youth center "Modus". In addition to the founder of the group, Yuri Kozlov, who, incidentally, had a son on this day, Vladimir Frolov, Sergey Umnov, Sergey Evstifeev, Mikhail Abramov, Sergey Lukoyanov participated in the concert.
In June of the same year, the first Kangaroo album, “Ball of Kerosene Lamps,” was recorded on the Soviet Nota tape recorder at school No. 17, where Sergey Umnov worked as a watchman. A month later, the second album “Eh!” Was released - the soundtrack to the self-produced film of the same name, which has not yet been restored. Even then, the group managed to find their own original sound, due, first of all, to what instruments the musicians could get ( guitar , bass , button accordion and conga ). This sound got its brightest expression in the subsequent albums “Eyes” and “For Housewives”, released in the summer of 1991 . However, even at that time, the opinions of the audience diverged as to what the “Kangaroo” is - the original musical concept or texts of Yuri Kozlov. In these texts, Yuri, perhaps completely unconsciously, inherited the Dadaists and Oberiuts , the classical poets of Japan , Persia and, at the same time, Russian folk poetry. It was at that time that the first articles about the work of the group appeared in the central and regional press. Here is a typical quote from the review of the album “Eyes”, published in the Nizhny Novgorod almanac-guide to musical sensations of the year “Listen and Read”:
“ The album begins with a complete sound r ...” - blockage in frequencies, no voice to hear. But with each song, there is a powerful set of revolutions, and from the middle to the end an awful depressive psychedelia brings down even the achievements of “ My Sounds ”. An amazing bunch: a bass-bong-guitar-button accordion, interacting in some strange way, glows the atmosphere to the boiling of volcanic lava. Rating: 5 " [1]“Listen and Read,” No. 16 (32) 1991
The authors of the review awarded “Kangaroo” a higher mark than, for example, the group “ N.O.M. "," Alice "," NEP ".
In the fall of 1991, the band’s musicians decided to move to St. Petersburg , where they give concerts in popular clubs and record the albums “Looking at Night” and “Zats”. The apartment on Ligovsky Prospekt , where the musicians lived, is becoming one of the places to visit for musicians, artists and simply creative people of St. Petersburg. The geography of Kangaroo touring activities is also expanding. Here is how, for example, the correspondent of the newspaper ENS described her impressions of one of the group’s outings (we are talking about speaking at the Flame of Paris-2 festival in May 1992 ):
“ Dark narcotic minimalism . If you dive into this funnel, get to the bottom of a common theme, then this is sex in the absence of love. Sex is not dirty, not household, not sublime, but analytically prepared. The result is difficult and objectionable, painful inability to love, no heat, no contact, unloving couple in an empty room - what to do, where to go from life? “You are in me, I’ll hide in you ...” An enchanted circle. Whirlpool Action. I don’t see any analogues to this group ”Ekaterina Borisova [2]
In the spring of 1993, a fairly thinned band (Yuri Kozlov and Sergey Umnov) returned to Penza , where a new member joined the band - guitarist Anatoly Belyakov, who had just returned from Yekaterinburg after graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy of USU . Kangaroo releases two new albums, completely unlike all the previous ones - Shuba-Luba and Panurg de Paris (French Album).
“ The roll came in the direction of ever greater minimalism. Lurid meditation somewhat disappeared, but Mamon shamanism became more, and a plastic performance appeared on the stage. ”Serge Chrysolite, music columnist [3]
“ Hey, who said there that minimalism is dark and narcotic? What is all this sex in the absence of love, and it terribly becomes? Yes, they have all the songs about love! A little strange, a little unexpected, a little bored, a little coldly detached, but about love. And about the Woman who seems to be little different among other living numbers ... "Anna Kalinina, journalist of Komsomolskaya Pravda [4]
Meanwhile, the group continues to energetically give concerts. Crowds of fans go to her concerts in the friendly clubs Theater of Remarkable Men and Airplane, even coming from other cities. Peter Mamonov invites the band's musicians to record a joint album, but soon this was prevented by his departure for permanent residence in the village.
In the spring of 1994, “Kangaroo” celebrates a magnificent five-year anniversary and organizes the international festival “Rocking the East”. And soon, unexpectedly for everyone, he announces self-dissolution. But then it did not work out for a long time to blossom. So, in the fall of 1996, with "inhuman" efforts, the group recorded and released the album "Zangezi" - the first CD of the collective. It is attended by musicians of several compositions of the group at once. The album is rotated on the radio, directors without the approval of the group collect tracks from it for the musical design of television series.
Soon the members of the team are moving to different cities. Since then, Kangaroo concerts have become a rarity, although the group continues to rehearse and write new songs.
