Little Bear Literary History
The idea to write a story about Paddington Bear was first born to Michael Bond when he saw a lonely bear on a shelf in a London store near Paddington Station on Christmas Eve 1956 , and bought it as a present to his wife. The little bear inspired Bond to come up with a story, and in ten days he wrote the first book. The book was handed over to literary agent Harvey Unne. Paddington Bear was first published on October 13, 1958 by William Collins & Sons. [2] [3]
At first, Michael Bond wanted the Teddy Bear to come βfrom darkest Africaβ, but his agent Harvey Unna suggested that the bears do not live in Africa, and then he changed his homeland to Peru . There is the only bear that lives in the Peruvian jungle, the so-called Andean or spectacled bear . [4] [5]
At Paddington Station, a story begins about a little teddy bear coming from Deep Peru. There he stands and waits for someone to pay attention to him. Mr. and Mrs. Brown decide to take care of the bold wanderer, and soon Paddington becomes a full member of their family. Since Paddington is a well-mannered teddy bear, he tries to be useful in the house. However, his ventures often turn into leprosy and pranks. Where the Paddington Bear is, itβs never boring. [6]
Soft toy
The first teddy bear was sewn in 1972 by Gabrielle Designs, owned by Shirley and Eddie Clarkson. A trial copy was presented by them to Christmas for their own children Joanna and Jeremy Clarkson (who later became a famous TV presenter and writer). [7]
