Construction History
The development and construction of universal amphibious assault ships of the "America" type began to gradually replace the universal amphibious assault ships of the type "Tarava" and "Uosp" .
Ships are intended for the same purposes as the universal landing ships of the previous types - to ensure landing as part of an expeditionary detachment of the marine corps on unequipped coasts of the enemy, along with landing equipment and means of airborne support for landing - combat aircraft with shortened / vertical take-off F-35 JSF , MV-22 Osprey convertiplanes and the MH-53 Super Stallion transport and landing helicopters.
Due to numerous changes to the project and underfunding during the economic crisis, the lead ship of the project, USS America was launched only on June 4, 2012 (instead of 2010 according to the plan), and its commissioning is scheduled for 2014 (instead of 2012). The first ship was accepted into the fleet on October 11, 2014 [2] .

Landing ability
For the landing of the expeditionary battalion of the marine corps are used:
- 2 landing boats LCU or
- 3 LCAC hovercraft or
- 6 landing craft LCM-8 Landing Craft, Mechanized
- 40 floating armored personnel carriers of the marine corps AAV7 (in the normal configuration) or 61 (in the maximum).
On the ships of the first series (Flight 0), however, there is no docking chamber for the above landing facilities; additional hangar rooms and workshops are located in its place.
