
Ludwig Silov
Peter Ludwig Meidell Syulov (better known as Silov [1] ; Norwegian Peter Ludvig Mejdell Sylow ; December 12, 1832 , Christiania - September 7, 1918 , ibid. ) - Norwegian mathematician . Author of several works on the theory of elliptic functions and group theory .
From 1858 to 1898 he was a teacher at a school in Halden . In 1862, Silov replaced the professor of Galois theory at the University of Oslo , where he set the task that led to the most important result of his life - the so-called Silov theorems , published in 1872 . In 1873 - 1881 , together with Sofus Lee, he worked on the publication of a complete collection of Abel 's works. In 1898 he was appointed professor at the University of Oslo.
