Located on the border between Argentina and Chile , the highest point of Chile. The height is 6893 meters. To the west of the volcano and to the Pacific coast stretches the Atacama Desert . On the eastern slope in the crater of the volcano is the world's highest lake at an altitude of 6390 meters. [3]

From Spanish, the name translates as “the source of a salty river,” that is, the Rio Salado River , which begins on a mountain [4] .

The volcano is considered extinct, since throughout the history of observations of it, not a single eruption has been recorded. However, occasionally passive volcanic activity was still noticed. So, in 1937, 1956 and 1993, there were minor emissions of sulfur and water vapor. [5]

The volcano was conquered in 1937 by Polish climbers Justin Vojnis and Jan Shchepansky. On the way to the summit, researchers found traces of the Inca's sacrificial altars. Apparently, the volcano Ojos del Salado was revered by the Indians as a sacred mountain.

On April 21, 2007, the Chilean athlete Gonzalo Bravo managed on the modified Suzuki Samurai ( Suzuki SJ ) to climb the slope of Ojos del Salado to a height of 6688 meters, thus setting the world record for climbing cars.
