The Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline (also known as the South Caucasus pipeline ) is a gas pipeline that supplies Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea to Georgia and Turkey. The diameter of the pipeline is 42 inches, the length is 970 km (442 km in Azerbaijan , 248 km in Georgia and 280 km from the Georgian-Turkish border to Erzurum ) [1] [2] [3] . The length of each pipe is 11.5 m. The pipe was supplied by the Japanese company Sumitomo Metal Industries . The contractors of the project were the Greek company CCIC (in Azerbaijan) and the Franco-American alliance Spie Capag / Petrofac (in Georgia), the same companies were contractors for the construction of the Azerbaijani and Georgian sections of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline [4] .
The South Caucasus gas pipeline envisages pumping gas produced under the Shah Deniz project [5] . On the territory of Azerbaijan and Georgia, the gas pipeline runs parallel to the BTC oil pipeline (10-28 meters). In a number of places, the possibility of simultaneously laying the pipes of the SKT and BTC pipelines was used, which allowed minimizing the environmental impact or exposure to geographical hazards [6] .
History
According to the agreement between Turkey and Azerbaijan, the first one will receive 91.0 billion m3 of natural gas within 15 years.
The construction of the Baku-Tbilisi gas pipeline began in 2004, which was completed by the end of 2006. Since the end of 2006, gas transportation to Georgia began as part of the first phase of the development of the Shahdeniz field. The official opening ceremony of the gas pipeline took place on March 25, 2007. And from July 2007, transportation to Turkey began.
Under the project for expanding the South Caucasus gas pipeline, on December 17, 2013, an investment decision was made. [7]
In 2014, as part of the expansion of the gas pipeline, a contract was signed with Bredero Shaw International BV to conduct pipe insulation. The contract value amounted to $ 70 million, and the implementation period is 18 months. [eight]
