The road is interrupted in three places where you need to use the ferries to drive along the entire length of the route.
Ireland
- Shannon Airport - N19 - N18 - Limerick - N7 - Dublin
The length of the first part of the route from Shannon Airport to Dublin via Limerick is 228 km. The part from Shannon Airport to Limerick is mainly a two-lane road with a dividing strip, with a short section of the motorway (part of the Limerick Southern District Road). The Shannon Tunnel, in accordance with the plans of 2010, should finish the bypass road around Limerick, through which it is now necessary to pass. Part of the east of Limerick to the western part of Port Lache is today a single-lane road without dividing lanes (N7), but this part will soon become a motorway after the completion of the M7 motorway by the end of 2010. The section from Port Lache to Nays is part of the M7 motorway, and the last part from Nays to Dublin is a two-lane road. To get from Dublin to Liverpool, you need to use a ferry .
UK
The E20 goes along the A5080 from Liverpool to Hoyton, along the M62 from Hoyton to the South Cave, and along the A63 to Hull . In the UK, the track is not indicated by its European name.
There is no ferry between Hull and Esbjerg .
Denmark
In Denmark, the E20 is a motorway from Esbjerg to the Öresund Bridge . The length of the Danish part of the route is 315 km.
The route crosses the Small Belt Strait along a 1700 m long bridge (main span is 600 m). Then it passes along the Big Belt bridge , which consists of two parts of 6 kilometers. On each of the bridges traffic is organized in three lanes in each direction.
The Big Belt Bridge and the Öresund Bridge are both paid, with a price of more than 30 €.
The Öresund bridge is 8 km long, and another 4 km pass in a tunnel on the Danish side of Öresund. The highway crosses the border of Denmark and Sweden on a bridge.
The Copenhagen - Odense route is very busy, and the most difficult section is perhaps Copenhagen - Køge . This road has two more E-numbers ( E47 and E55 ). At the intersection with Motorway 21, traffic jams often occur in Ishoy.
Sweden
In Sweden, the E20 runs along the motorway between the Öresund Bridge in Malmö and Nes, 30 kilometers east of Gothenburg , with a length of 320 km. Further it is mainly also a highway on the route between Wrestorp (20 km west of Örebro ) to Stockholm .
The length of the Swedish section is 770 km. It has a total length of 280 km with E06 , 50 km with E50 and 35 km with E4 .
Part of the route through Stockholm is very busy, including the busiest road in Scandinavia Essingelden (160,000 cars per day). There are also often traffic jams on the E20 stretch, which runs through central Stockholm. If you expect to catch a ferry, you should lay an extra 30 minutes. A new tunnel, being built north of the center, which will become part of the E20, will remove some congestion, but not all. The completion of the tunnel is planned in 2015.
Stockholm - Tallinn car ferry departs daily, while it travels 15 hours. The port in Stockholm is located 5 km northeast of the city center.
Estonia and Russia
The distance from Tallinn to St. Petersburg is 360 km. The track, with the exception of a number of motorway sections in Estonia, runs as a two-lane highway.
The main reason for the long delays in this section of the E20 is the limited capacity of the border crossing point of Estonia and Russia in Narva and Ivangorod. In August 2011, crossing the border became possible only through preliminary booking in order to control the flow of vehicles, however, the waiting time can nevertheless be from several hours to days (if you do not book the border crossing in advance through GoSwift). A section of the E20 highway passing through the territory of the Russian Federation is also designated as the federal public road A-180 . [2] .
