Biography

The son of musicologist Raisa Vladimirovna Glezer (1914-1985) and mining engineer Emanuel Mikhailovich Messerer (1911-1941), who died during the war while extinguishing an incendiary bomb on the roof of a house on Sadovo-Kudrinskaya in Moscow.

Comes from a famous ballet and creative family. His cousin prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya and cousins Azarius Plisetskiy , Mikhail Messerer and artist Boris Messerer . His aunts are Sulamith Messerer and Rachel Messerer , his uncle is Asaf Messerer .

In 1945 he gained fame as a young actor, playing the role of Jackie in the movie " Fifteen Years Captain ."

He graduated from the Institute of Foreign Languages. M. Toreza , worked on the Moscow radio , in the newspaper “ Abroad ” and the magazine “ Peer ”.

In 1981 he emigrated to the United States, where he continued journalistic activities. Being a close friend of the writer Leonid Tsypkin , he took out the manuscript of his novel “ Summer in Baden ” and handed it over for publication in New York's Novaya Gazeta. He defended his thesis at New York University [2] , where Neil Postman was his mentor. He taught English and Russian in the USA, and English literature. He has published a number of memoirs, including about Joseph Brodsky . Published in the magazines "The Seagull ", " Seven Arts ", " Notes on Jewish History ", " Workshop ".

He performed in the USA with recitals on the piano. His repertoire includes works by Chopin , Schumann and Scriabin . On October 6, 2006, M.E. Messerer held a concert in the Scriabin House-Museum , dedicated to the memory of Raisa Glezer .

Son Philip became a film director [3] , the eldest daughter Alice is an Australian writer.
