Biography
Nikolai Alekseevich Kasatkin was born in Moscow on December 13 (25), 1859 in the family of the artist-lithographer Alexei Alexandrovich Kasatkin.
From 1873 to 1883 he studied at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , where his mentors were Wanderers Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov .
Since 1891 he was a member of the Association of Wanderers .
In 1883, Kasatkin received the highest award of the school - a large silver medal and the title of artist for the painting "Beggars on the Church Porch". In 1894 and 1895 he visited the Donbass .
In 1894 - 1917 , Kasatkin worked as a teacher in his native School. In addition, after graduating from college, Kasatkin invited the largest Russian book publisher I. D. Sytin to work in his publishing house, where the artist worked for about thirty years, participating in the creation of Russian History in Pictures, the first desk calendar, and The Great Reform , an anniversary publication dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the implementation of the Peasant Reform , etc.
After the October Revolution, Kasatkin was the first to be awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the Republic ( 1923 ). He entered the newly created AHRR (" Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia ", an art association, the largest and most powerful of the Russian creative groups of the 1920s). In 1924 he was sent to England to capture the social struggle of the proletariat there. On the whole, attempts to make Gorky Soviet Painting out of it turned out to be untenable due to the apparent incommensurability of talents. Best of all, in the late period he managed some vivid portraits-types ("For study. Pioneer with books" 1926 , Museum of the Revolution ).
December 17, 1930 , giving explanations at the Museum of the Revolution to his new painting “Sigida” (“The Carian Tragedy ”), which depicts the tragedy of the main character Nadezhda Sigida (Malaxiano) , Kasatkin suddenly died. Buried in Moscow .
Pupils: B.V. Johanson , V.V. Meshkov and others.
