A 50 km mass start in men's skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics was held on February 23rd .
The race took place in Whistler's Olympic Park from 9:30 to 12:00 local time ( UTC-8 ). Athletes ran 10 laps of 5 km, and at the end of each lap had the opportunity to change skis, no more than two times.
Of the winners of the Turin Olympics marathon, only the champion, Giorgio di Centa , participated. Also involved was the silver medalist of 2002 in Salt Lake City (where the race was held with a separate start), the 39-year-old Andrus Weerpalu , specially preparing for this race, which became his only one at the Olympics in Vancouver. Both went to the finish in the group of leaders, but did not receive medals.
At the 49th kilometer, the leading group consisted of approximately 15 athletes. When entering the stadium, Axel Teichmann tried to go ahead, but Petter Nortug overtook him at the finish line. For the third place there was a struggle between Dario Cologne and Johan Ulsson , but Cologne fell at the exit to the finish line and was left without a medal. The third was Johan Ulsson .
For Northug, this is the first individual gold medal of the Olympic Games, for Teichmann it is the first individual medal; Ulsson previously won the relay in gold and the bronze in duathlon at the Vancouver Games.
Since 1998, when Björn Daly defeated Nagano in a marathon (with a separate start), the Norwegians did not manage to win this distance.
