The 4 × 10 km relay in men's skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics was held on February 24th . The first 2 stages the athletes ran in a classic style, and the final 2 - free.
The race took place in Whistler's Olympic Park from 11:15 to 13:00 local time ( UTC-8 ). During the race, wet snow periodically fell, intensified during the first two stages by the classic style.
During the 3rd and 4th stages, Sweden, the Czech Republic and France led the free style. Before the last stage, their advantage over the pursuers was more than 30 seconds. At the last stage, the Norwegian Petter Northug made an attempt to get hold of the leading group. He managed to do this about a kilometer before the finish line, but by this time, the Swede Marcus Hölner had come off the Czech Martin Koukal and the Frenchman Emmanuel Jonnier . Hellner finished alone, winning his second gold at the Vancouver Olympics. Nortug at the entrance to the stadium ran away from the Frenchman, but the Czech kept him almost to the last meters, but could not stop Nortug from winning silver for Norway, which for him became the third medal at the Games.
The Swedish national team won the men's ski relay for the first time since the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary . The Czechs first entered the top three winners (the Czechoslovak team won the bronze at the same time in 1988 in Calgary). Over the past 6 Olympics, the Norwegians have won 3 gold and 2 silver in the men's relay since 1992 (they were left without medals only in 2006 in Turin). 4-time relay world champion (2001, 2005, 2007, 2009) 38-year-old Odd-Björn Yelmeset was able to win the relay in the relay and the Olympic Games (he also won 50 km bronze in 2002 in Salt Lake City )
The 2006 Olympic champions, the Italian team, retaining 3 out of 4 skiers of the previous composition, took 9th place, losing to the champions for more than 2 minutes.
