History
The order for the construction of the submarine was given on June 2, 1938 . The boat was laid down on November 5, 1939 at the Bremen-Vulcan shipyard under building number 2, launched on August 31, 1940 . The boat went into operation on October 31, 1940 under the command of Captain-Lieutenant Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat.

Service History
The boat made 8 military campaigns. Sank 4 vessels with a total displacement of 24,694 gross tonnage, one warship (925 tons), damaged one ship (123 gross tons), damaged one auxiliary warship (11,402 gross tons).
Sunk on May 2, 1942 east of Cartagena , Spain , in an area with coordinates depth charges from the British destroyers HMS Wishart , HMS Wrestler and from a British amphibious aircraft such as Catalina. 47 dead (whole crew).

Boat Attacks
- May 21, 1941 the boat was forced to sink artillery fire from the British corvette HMS Verbena (K 85) , guarding the convoy HX-126 . In the next 4 hours after embarking on the boat, about 125 depth bombs were dropped from Verbena and from the HMS Burnham corvette (H 82) . The boat was seriously damaged and headed for the base.
- On May 30, 1941, a defenseless boat, severely damaged in a previous attack and having on board the three surviving crew members from Bismarck, was attacked by the British submarine HMS Sealion in the Bay of Biscay . The boat was unable to dive due to the release of chlorine from damaged batteries, but she managed to evade five torpedoes by maneuvering and reach the base.
