Biography
Marta Scott was born on September 22, 1912 in Jamesport, Missouri, into the family of engineer Walter Scott and Leta McKinley, a relative of US President William McKinley. [1] [2] She became interested in acting career while studying in high school. Her first public appearance was in Chicago during the World Exhibition , dedicated to centennial progress, in 1933-1934.
Shortly afterwards, Scott moved to New York , where her career on Broadway began . Her most famous role was Emily in the production of " Our Town ", in the film adaptation of which in 1940 the actress made her film debut. This role earned her an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress . In subsequent years, she starred in films such as Howards from Virginia (1940), One Step to Paradise (1941), Hours of Despair (1955), and The Ten Commandments (1956) and Ben Gure ”(1959), in which she played the mother of Charlton Heston characters.
Martha Scott has also starred in television. She had roles in the series Main Hospital , Love Boat , Dallas , Private Detective Magnum , She wrote the murder , and many others. She also played the role of Bob Newhart's mother in his own show.
One of her last known roles was Beatrice's sister in the disaster film “ Airport 1975 ” (1974). For her contribution to the film industry, the actress was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
From 1940 to 1946, Martha Scott was married to producer and director Carlton Alsop, whose marriage ended in divorce. Immediately after the divorce, she married composer and jazz musician Mel Powell, from whom she gave birth to two children. The second marriage of the actress lasted until the death of her husband in 1998.
Marta Scott died on May 28, 2003 in a Los Angeles suburb at the age of 90 and was buried next to her husband. During the 2004 Oscars in 2004, Martha Scott's name was not listed on the Memory List, although she was a member of the Film Academy and was nominated for this award.
