History
Although these places have been inhabited since ancient times, until recently they were not merged into a single administrative structure.
In 1953, the government of the People's Republic of China decided to start mining coal in these places on an industrial scale. In 1956, the Party Committee of the Pingdingshan mining region (中共 平顶山 矿区 委员会) and the Pingdingshan Local Committee (平顶山 办事处) were created as part of the Xuchang Special District (区 专区). In March 1957, by the decision of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Pingdingshan City was created, directly subordinate to the authorities of Henan Province. In 1960, Baofeng County was annexed to Pingdingshan, but in 1961 it was reconstructed.
In 1964, the city of Pingdingshan was transformed into the Pingdingshan Special District (平顶山 двойной), with dual subordination: the ministry of the coal industry was in charge of coal mining, and the authorities of Henan Province were responsible for everything else. In 1968, the city of Pingdingshan was created again, still subordinated directly to the authorities of the province of Henan. In 1969, Xinhua and Dongwei districts were created as part of Pindinshan. In 1971, the Western District was created. In 1977, the Ugan district was transferred to Pingdingshan from Uyang county , but in 1979 it came under direct subordination to the authorities of Xuchang district, and in 1982 it again came under the jurisdiction of Pingdingshan.
In 1983, Lushan, Baofeng and Yixian counties were transferred from Xuchang County to the jurisdiction of Pingdingshan. In 1986, Xiangcheng and Jiaxian counties from Xuchang County, and Linzhu County from Luoyang County, came under the jurisdiction of Pingdingshan. In 1988, Linju County was transformed into Zhuzhou City County, and in 1990, the Ugan District was also transformed into a city district; both of these city counties were directly subordinate to the Henan province, which delegated their management to the Pingdingshan city district.
In 1994, the Suburban District of Pindinshan was transformed into the Zhanhe District. In 1996, Xiangcheng County was returned to Xuchang District. In 1997, the Western District was renamed Shilun District.
In 2014, Zhuzhou was removed from subordination to the Pingdingshan authorities, and became directly subordinate to the authorities of Henan Province.
