Tectonic map

Tectonic map of the Carpathians

A tectonic map ( English Tectonic map ) is a kind of geological map that reflects the modern structure of the Earth's crust and its individual regions, as well as the history of its development, taking into account all the patterns that have emerged. The conventions allow us to understand the three-dimensionality (bulk) of tectonic bodies.

Description

Tectonic plate layout

On a small scale on tectonic maps are depicted - platforms, shields, plates , geosynclines , folded areas.

On a large scale - individual folds, faults , horst , grabens , etc.

Types of tectonic maps

There are:

  • tectonic zoning maps on which natural structural formation units are distinguished;
  • structural maps showing structural forms using stratoisohypsum.

History

From the XIX century began to make "tectonic schemes" and "structural maps." The compilation of tectonic maps was complicated by the insufficient knowledge of the structure of the earth's crust and its individual regions, especially in depth. Drilling svkazhin and geophysical methods allow to obtain reasonable information about the spatial distribution of various geological bodies necessary for the preparation of tectonic maps [1] .

Academician N. S. Shatsky compiled the "Tectonic map of the CCCP and adjacent countries" (1953), on the basis of which the "International Tectonic Map of Europe" (1964) was compiled.

In 1969, scientists of the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences received the State Prize of the USSR for participating in the compilation of tectonic maps of Eurasia on a scale of 1: 5,000,000 and in the monograph "Tectonics of Eurasia."
