The final tournament of the XXVI European Championship of volleyball among men was held from September 3 to 13, 2009 in the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Izmir . The winner of the competition for the first time in history was the national team of Poland .

Qualifying games
Without selection, the following teams became participants in the final tournament of the European Championship:
- Turkey as a team of the host country of the championship,
- Spain , Russia , Serbia , Finland , Germany and Italy according to the results of the previous European championship .
At the first stage of qualification, 14 teams held butt games, the winners of which - the teams of Great Britain, Montenegro, Macedonia, Sweden, Israel and Azerbaijan - reached the second stage.
At the second stage of qualification, 24 teams were divided into 6 groups. Following the results of two-round competitions in groups, their winners became finalists of EURO 2009.

The teams that took second places in the groups held butt games for the three remaining trips to the final stage of the championship. The games ended with the following results: Czech Republic - Macedonia - 3: 0, 2: 3, Slovenia - Portugal - 3: 0, 3: 0, Belgium - Poland - 2: 3, 3: 2 (the Polish team was selected to the final stage of the championship thanks the best ratio of points won and lost in these matches is 218: 208).

Conduct System
At the first stage, 16 teams are divided into 4 groups. The three best teams from each group reached the second stage, where they formed two groups (E and F) with 6 teams. The points earned in the matches of the first round with the national teams that did not drop out of the competition went to the offset of the second stage. The two best teams from groups E and F reached the playoffs. The semifinal pairs were determined by the draw, while the teams that took first places in the second stage groups had to play against the teams that took second places. The winners of the semifinals met in the final, the losers played bronze medals.
