His first professional club was Mertebi . In Georgia, he won three league titles and two cups with Dynamo Tbilisi, was twice recognized as the player of the year. He gained international fame after matches for the Georgian national team against Wales in 1994 and 1995.
In 1995, Kinkladze moved from Dynamo to the English Premier League in Manchester City , where, thanks to his dribbling skills and spectacular goals, he became a fan favorite having won twice the prize of the best football player of the club. Kinkladze remained with City, despite the demotion in 1996, but after re-releasing the club in 1998, he joined the Dutch Ajax . Kinkladze couldn’t take root in the Netherlands, where he spent a little more than a year and returned to England, Derby County became his new club. He spent four years at Derby, playing nearly 100 matches. After leaving in 2003 and several unsuccessful attempts to find a new club, Kinkladze joined the Cyprus Anorthosis in 2004, with whom he won the championship. He completed his career in Kazan "Ruby" in 2006.
In 2011-2012, he worked in Anorthosis as a technical director.

The early years
Born on July 6, 1973 in Tbilisi, he lived in the Didube area with his father, Robinson (engineer, originally from Guria) [7] , mother Khatuna (teacher) and older sister [8] . George's father really wanted his son to become a football player, for this he forced him to walk around the yard on his knees to strengthen his legs. In September 1979, the father brought the six-year-old George to the football school "Young Dynamo" to coach Avtandil Kheladze. In the first lesson, the coach took him to school. The father continued to educate the athlete in his son himself: he trained him in gymnastics, arm wrestling , swimming and running. Also, George was engaged in Georgian dances in the national dance ensemble of Georgia.
For several years, Kinkladze played in the Dynamo youth team in Tbilisi, then in the second squad. There he performed with Shota Arveladze , who later became his partner both in the main Dynamo team at the club level and in the Georgian national team at the international level [9] .
Club career
Early career
Kinkladze graduated from football school in 1990, however, Dynamo has not yet counted on him. Thanks to the help of a family friend - Koba Zhorzhikashvili - he ends up in the club “Mertebi” (with cargo. “Stunning”) with the coach Vazha Chkhaidze. In the 1990 season, “Merteby” won 35 of 38 matches and moved from League 2 to League 1 (Kinkladze spent 20 games). In the 1991 season, the team won 13 out of 15 matches and advanced to the big leagues [10] .
In 1992, Revaz Dzodzuashvili insisted on his transition to Dynamo. For Kinkladze was paid 1 million Soviet rubles. On September 17, 1992, he first played for the Georgian national team against Azerbaijan [11] .
In the very first year of playing for Dynamo, Kinkladze won the championship and cup of Georgia , having also received the prize of the best player in Georgia. However, due to the ongoing civil war in Georgia in 1993, the Dynamo Tbilisi leadership decided to give their players the opportunity to play in a more stable environment, and therefore sent them on loan to various foreign clubs [12] .
In early 1994, Kinkladze was leased to the 2nd Bundesliga club “ Saarbrücken ” [13] . He played the first match in Germany on March 4 against Tennis-Borussia . However, he rarely played full matches, and in one of the meetings (with Hertha ) he was removed. In mid-1994 he returned to Dynamo. After some time, club president Merab Zhordania agreed to rent Kinkladze to Spanish Atletico for £ 200 thousand. When watching in a club in Madrid, he was noticed by scouts of Boca Juniors and offered to perform in Argentina. For a month he played for Boku, but the player’s contract was never redeemed. The only pleasant impression of Argentina, according to Kinkladze, was a meeting with the childhood idol - Diego Maradona [14] . However, it was Maradona who was a competitor to Kinkladze for a place in the first team.
Soon Kinkladze returned to Spain, where he was invited to view in Real Madrid . The head coach of the Spaniards Jorge Valdano, following a two-week training session, invited him to play in the second team. But soon Merab Zhordania came to the player and asked him to return to Georgia to strengthen Dynamo. In turn, at the end of the season, he promised to help with employment in Europe.
Manchester City
In the 1994/95 season, thanks to the games for the Georgian national team, Kinkladze gained fame, however, only President of Manchester City Francis Lee took concrete actions. He agreed with Merab Jordania on the player’s transfer to England in the 1995/96 season [15] . On July 15, 1995, the contract was signed (contract price - £ 2 million) [16] .
The first match for Kinkladze was played on August 19, 1995 against Tottenham Hotspur [17] . In the 1995/96 season, Alan Ball's team was initially plagued by setbacks - for the first three months she could not win a match. Despite this, Kinkladze quickly became a key player in the team. The first victory in the games of that season in the match against Aston Villa was brought to the team by Kinkladze, having played the wall with Neil Quinn [18] .
Immediately after moving to Manchester City, George was in a somewhat uncomfortable position: he had to live in a hotel, and then in English he did not speak very well. To support Kinkladze, his mother moved to Manchester [19] . At that time, the team was preparing for the match against Middlesbrough (December 1995), for Kinkladze the game was a kind of duel with Juninho Paulista . Kinkladze scored the first goal, but in the end the match ended with the score 4: 1 in favor of Middlesbrough [20] . At the same time, fans of the winning club called George "the best player of the opponents of the season" [21] . Kinkladze was perceived by many as the leader of his team:
| Against the background of the non- adaptable Rösler, there was Kinkladze, who quickly became the fan favorite that they needed [22] . |
In March 1996, Kinkladze scored a spectacular goal against Southampton - scored five players and sent the ball into the net past goalkeeper Dave Bisant [16] [23] . By the end of the season, another ex-Dynamo player, Mikhail Kavelashvili, became Kinkladze's partner.
The fate of the MC in the Premier League was decided in the last match against Liverpool. Kinkladze and partners expected Liverpool to take care of themselves for the upcoming FA Cup final in a week against Manchester United. The hopes of the MS players were reinforced by the fact that Liverpool guaranteed itself the third place of the championship by the last round. However, by the 10th minute of the first half, the MS was losing with a score of 0: 2. Only after entering the field in the 70th minute of Kavelashvili did the MC manage to play the gap [24] , but not a single team could score the winning goal. As a result, the MS flew into the First Division , as Kiknkladze himself estimated, for the most part due to understaffing. Kinkladze did not intend to play in the First Division, however, he remained in the team for the 1996/97 season.
In MS Kinkladze twice won the title “Player of the Year” for two consecutive seasons [25] . For some time in the First English League, his partners in the club were Murtaz Shelia and Kakhaber Tskhadadze.
The last season as part of the MC for Kinkladze was overshadowed by an ankle injury received during the game for the Georgian national team, George was forced to be treated for a long time. According to the results of the 1997/98 season, the club flew into the 2nd league and the management decided to sell an expensive player [26] .
Ajax
In 1998, it was sold to the Ajax club for 5 million pounds. He was invited to the Dutch club by the head coach of Ajax Morten Olsen. He saw Kinkladze on the site of Litmanen , who was supposed to go to Barcelona in the offseason. Kinkladze agreed to the transition, but after his arrival in Amsterdam it turned out that the transition of Litmanen did not take place. As a result, Olsen began to try to release Kinkladze to the left flank of midfield. However, the footballer did not manage to switch to a game on the flank and soon dropped out of the base [27] . For the Dutch club, he spent only 12 games, after which he returned to England on loan [28] [29] .
Derby County
Since November 1999, Kinkladze began performing for the Derby, where he was leased by Ajax [30] . In April 2000, it was finally sold at Derby for $ 4.5 million. [31] [32]
At the end of July 2000, he underwent a hernia surgery. Because of this, Kinkladze was forced to miss almost a month of pre-season training. Nevertheless, he successfully started the 2000/01 season - in the 7th round, thanks to the Georgian legionary, the Derby minority player managed to snatch a draw from Leeds [33] . In the future, largely due to injuries Kinkladze failed to maintain this level. As a result, The Guardian called the football player the main disappointment of the season with Derby [34] .
In “Derby” he spent four years (almost 100 games), of the post-Soviet players, Kinkladze’s teammate was Estonian goalkeeper Mart Poom . At the end of the 2002/03 season, the club suggested the player to change the terms of the contract, in particular, to reduce the salary by three times, this was due to the fact that the club had a lot of debts. As a result, Kinkladze decided to leave the club [35] .
He spent the 2003/04 season in search of a club, but he never found a place anywhere [36] [37] [38] .
Anorthosis
In the 2004/05 season, Kinkladze played in the Cypriot Anorthosis, where the head coach was his ex-partner in Dynamo and the Georgian national team, Temuri Ketsbaia [39] . At the end of the season, he won the championship gold medals.
With Anorthosis, he began a new season 2005/06, participated in the matches of the preliminary round of the Champions League and played the match for the Cyprus Super Cup [40] . However, just before the start of the Cyprus Championship, he left the club.
Rubin
At the end of August 2005, Kinkladze ended up in the Russian club Rubin [41] , with whom he signed a contract until the end of the season. In the new club, he successfully spent the second half of the year [42] and became one of the best second-round distributors of the Russian Championship 2005 [43] , so the contract was extended for another year. However, in the new season he almost did not play, most of the time Kinkladze healed the injury of the inguinal rings. At the end of the 2006 season, the contract with the team ended, which the management refused to renew [44] . Kinkladze tried to go back to Anorthosis, but the attempt was unsuccessful. He soon completed his player career.
Georgia National Team
Kinkladze made his debut for the national team on September 17, 1992 in a match against Azerbaijan. In September 1994, Kinkladze was called into the national team to play against Moldova in Tbilisi . Kinkladze's game attracted the attention of Italian clubs, where the press gave him the nickname "Black Sea River", but he did not have any concrete proposals from the clubs. That was until the director of Manchester City, Francis Lee, saw the record of his game. He began negotiations on a transfer, contacting Merab Jordan and proposing a transfer of Kinkladze to the City [45] .
Exactly two months later, Kinkladze played two good games against the Wales team . It was at the gates of Wales that Kinkladze scored his first goal in the national team, Georgia won with a score of 5: 0 in the home match [46] . In the second leg at Cardiff Arm Park, scouts from several clubs saw Kinkladze's goal from 18 meters.
In the 1996 European Championship qualifying tournament , Kinkladze scored from the penalty spot against the Bulgarian national team, his team won 2-1 [47] .
In the qualifying tournament of the 1998 World Cup , Kinkladze scored the second goal against Moldova and brought the victory 2-0 [48] .
Kinkladze scored the third goal against the Lithuanian national team in the elimination match of the 2002 World Cup , where his team won 4-0 away [49] .
He spent the last game for the national team in 2005.
Game Style
Kinkladze played as a point guard. As a rule, he played ahead of the rest of the midfielders. His main role was to create scoring chances, he was a creative player. Dribbling skills were considered as one of the strongest characteristics of Kinkladze [50] [51] .
The weak link in the Kinkladze game was defense. He did not want to change, which caused the disappointment of the coaches. Because of his reluctance to correct shortcomings, the Manchester City coach Joe Royle began to release him less often on the field [52] .
In some cases, Kinkladze played as a second striker with a lower positional load. In this role, Kinkladze played in Manchester City under the leadership of Frank Clark [53] , and in Derby County under the leadership of Fabrizio Ravanelli [54] . Although he is left-handed, he played poorly on the left flank, and publicly expressed that he did not like to play in this position.
