Igor Pavlovich Smirnov (born May 19, 1941 , Leningrad ) is a Soviet and German philosopher and philologist , literary theorist, culturologist , professor at the University of Constance ( Germany ).

Biography
Born in a family of employees. In 1958-1963 he studied at the philological faculty of Leningrad State University . The theme of the thesis was dedicated to the work of Nikolai Aseev .
In 1963-1966 he studied at the graduate school of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the USSR Academy of Sciences . In 1967 he defended his thesis on a specialty "philological sciences"; topic: “Poetic tradition and individuality of the poet ( N. Aseev , N. Zabolotsky , V. Lugovskoy) ”.
In 1977, he wrote and submitted for defense a doctoral dissertation, “Questions of poetic tradition (Modern literature in its relation to ancient Russian literary monuments and folklore)”.
Since 1963, published as a literary critic .
In 1966-1979 he worked as a junior research fellow in the sector of Old Russian literature at the Pushkin House .
In 1980-1981 he received an invitation to take the post of “guest professor” ( German Gastprofessor ) at the universities of Hamburg and Utrecht .
In 1981 he emigrated from the USSR to Germany . Since 1982, he has been appointed professor at the University of Constance (Germany). The topic of the introductory lecture course: "Unofficial traditionalism versus official messianism (on the genesis of two traditions in Russian culture" ( German: Inoffizieller Traditionalismus vs. offizieller Messianismus. Zur Genese zweier russischer Kulturtraditionen ).
Main research interests:
- theory of literature
- theory and history of culture
- psychoanalysis and the psychology of history
- philosophical anthropology
He also dealt with the problems of modern Russian literature (the works of Vladimir Sorokin , Dmitry Prigov , the latest “female” prose).
Since 2006, Smirnov has been retiring and has since not been teaching at the University of Constance.
Co-editor of the magazine Slavic World ( German: Die Welt der Slaven , Munich). Member of Editorial Boards at Elementa Magazines (Los Angeles). “New Literary Review” (Moscow), “Star” (St. Petersburg), “Discourse” (Moscow), “Criticism and Semiotics” (Novosibirsk).
A number of works of I.P. Smirnov was written in German, his works are also translated from Russian into English, German, French.
