Society History
The first patron of the society was S. G. Stroganov and he, along with Count A. S. Uvarov , is considered its creator.
The first charter of the company was approved on September 19 ( October 1 ), 1864 . But the first meeting of the founders took place on February 17 (29), 1864 , and this date is considered the official date of foundation of the Company [2] . In addition to archeology, members of the society also engaged in numismatics , restoration and protection of ancient monuments [3] , and conducted publishing activities. Public meetings of the Society were held in Moscow at 1/7 at Malaya Dmitrovka .
In 1868, Alexander II transferred to the Moscow Archaeological Society the building of the chambers of Averkiy Kirillov ( Moscow , Bersenevskaya embankment , 20 [4] ) which became the first objects of the restored Society. Thanks to this successful restoration, the Society became a methodological and scientific restoration center and performed these functions until 1889 , when the Archaeological Commission began to do this. In the period from 1869 to 1911, the Moscow Archaeological Society held archaeological congresses at which the newly discovered monuments were exhibited for all to see. In 1877, the Moscow Archaeological Society adopted a new charter.
The number of the Company did not exceed 500 people (423 members in 1904 , 362 members in 1914 ). Since 1872, the Society received government subsidies for archaeological excavations. The Society itself existed on donations and proceeds from the sale of publications of the company, and only in 1914, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Company, a state subsidy of 10 thousand rubles was assigned to it [5] .
Under society, there were commissions: on the preservation of monuments (since 1876), eastern (since 1887), Slavic (since 1892), archaeological (since 1896), on the study of old Moscow (since 1909). [6] The last of them, known as the Old Moscow Commission, was headed by Countess P. S. Uvarova , widow of A. S. Uvarov. In October 1917, Uvarova left Moscow for the Kuban , and then emigrated to Yugoslavia . Commission meetings resumed in January 1918 .
After P.S. Uvarova, the MAO was headed by E.V. Gauthier-Dufaye , who was soon forced to emigrate, then A.M. Vasnetsov , and since 1919, D.N. Anuchin . Since the state took over the protection of the monuments, the activities of "Old Moscow" after the revolution became the main one for the entire MAO. Reports were read at the commission's meetings, its members were engaged in identifying and protecting monuments, exhibitions and excursions were held, collections of the Moscow Local History Specialist and others were published. In June 1923, the Moscow Archaeological Society and its commissions, except for the Commission for the Study of Old Moscow, were closed. Only through various associations with official organizations did Old Moscow manage to survive until February 1930 . In 1990, the activities of the Commission for the Study of Old Moscow were revived on the basis of the State Public Historical Library . Its chairman was the famous writer- Moscow scholar V. B. Muravyov , and his secretary was A. M. Koroteyeva. [7]
