Sari Pul (province)

Sari-Pul [1] (also Sar-i-Pul , Saripul [2] ; Pers. سرپل , Pashto سرپل ) - one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan . Located in the north of the country. In the west and north it borders with the vilayats Jauzjan and Balkh , in the south - with the vilayat Gur , in the south - with the vilayat Samangan . It is divided into seven districts and 896 villages. The administrative center is the city of Sari Pul .

The population of Vilayat as of 2012 is about 532,000 people [3] and consists of a large number of ethnic groups and tribes.

History

The territory of the modern province from 1747 to 1831 was part of the first Afghan state - the Durrani Empire [2] . Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the situation remained relatively peaceful; it was spared by three Anglo-Afghan wars .

As an independent administrative-territorial unit of the country, Sari-Pul was established in 1988 with the support of a North Afghan politician [4] .

During the Civil War in Afghanistan (1996-2001), the territory of the province was controlled by the armed groups of Abdul-Rashid Dostum , then came under the control of the Taliban . The Islamist governor in 1999 was subjected to personal sanctions by decision of the UN Security Council [5] , and at the end of 2001 he was the first arrested high-ranking Taliban functionary [6] .

Demographics

The population of the province as of 2012 is about 532,000. The population is predominantly rural - 491,100 people, and only 40,900 - urban. There are more men (272,400) than women (259,600) [3] .

Economics

The basis of the economy is agriculture and mining. In 2011, the Afghan government signed a contract with the China National Oil and Gas Corporation (CNPC) for oil production in the Amu Darya Valley in the territory of the province [7] . Oil production began in October 2012 [8] .
